They reduced the rate and took them from certain activities. Poe seems a good way with the chests. But decoding engrams and looting chests on planets and bounties can earn you a few coins.

Are there official notes of this? Bungie tweaks some stuff from time to time, so if it wasn't made official it could revert back after a few days.

I cba checking all the patch notes but it was either in 2.0 or a couple patches before.
