How on earth is this even a conversation?...we have the bloody internet for crying out loud if you need to look something up.
They are LMG's.
People fail to understand what a "Machine Gun" is and confuse HMG and LMG.
Here's the short version..
A "machine gun" was originally designed/created as a HUGE f*¢%¡*g weapon, designed to mow down large groups of attacking soldiers.... originating sometime between the civil American war and the first world war..it was like 6 feet long attached to two giant wagon wheels. And it had to be carried by vehicle and it was manned by at least 4 men to even use it. .. this was refered to as a "Machine Gun". many years later when they had fine tuned the mechanics and had made the gun much smaller..able to be manned and operated by a single operative... they gave these weapons the moniker of "Light Machine Gun"...or LMG..because of his much smaller they were to there counterparts.. however these weapons, while able to do well against infantry, don't hold up as well against vehicles or other heavy infantry...so there are separately made machine guns for different purposes...
In short...
If a single soldier can operate it and fire the weapon, standing...a la Rambo (which is bull considering the amount of recoil, an LMG is meant to be fired in a seated or tri pod position, F.Y.I.)... then it is considered a small machine or LMG
...if it is mounted to a vehicle or large tri pod and requires several operator's to use it, then this is considered a normal sized machine gun....it is usually just called a Machine Gun.....it is only given the moniker of Heavy Machine Gun or HMG ... when they are being used in conjunction with it's smaller cousin the LMG so as not to be confused when issuing to soldiers, etc..
Sweet mother of pearl... please stop calling them heavy machine guns!

Gotta reload my heavy machine gun

All of you are still quite wrong, as a soldier learning how to operate a machine gun is basic. We use two types of machine guns in the Army, M240-B and an M249 SAW(squad automatic weapon) the SAW generally weighs about 16.4 pounds, without any linked ammunition being carried. The 240-Bravo weighs around two pounds more. At 18.7 pounds. Give or take. As im sure youve noticed i mentioned a SQUAD Automatic weapon. While they can be carried and operated by a single soldier, they are made to be operated by two soldiers. One to carry the weapon and around 100 rounds in links, the other using the standard M-4, seven mags and 600 rounds in links for the machine gun(this is for the SAW) when reloaded the operator requires help to ensure it gets done quickly and correctly, while the operator proceeds to fire in 3-5 second bursts(as to not over heat and melt the barrel) when it gets to a certain point, clp is applied to the bolt, usually at each reload. The second soldier helps with this while the first reloads the weapon. If the barrel does become too hot, a barrel switch is then conducted. With help from the second soldier, the barrel is removed and then replaced with the second. If the weapon jams as is quite common, soldier 2 provides cover fire until problem is solved. These weapons are not meant, even now, to be operated by a single person. Hopefully you see this, as youve just been told, by a soldier

It is called a heavy machine because it is a heavy weapon and it's a machine gun so hmg.

Your wrong about the Rambo part. In the movie he is firing the M60. It's about 40" long and weighs about 25 lbs. Due to the short action gas cylinder, length, and weight. It can easily be fired from a standing position. With a fire rate of 500-650 rpm and a range of 1200 yards. It's purpose is mainly suppression.

Editado por MysticalSnurtle: 10/25/2015 4:08:15 AMOne question. Are the turrets that the master chief tears out of their tripods heavy machine guns? If so I have a hard time seeing how the machine guns guardians wield aren't heavy machine guns. Unless the guardians just carry giant light machine guns.

Editado por IR0N MANT1S: 10/25/2015 4:23:44 AMYes. You'll notice the Master Chief, has like super human strength and rips them right from there mount or tripod station/vehicle....those are HMG's.... the guns the guardian's are using are LMG's.. belt fed machine guns, like the ones Rambo uses at the end of the second movie...for example, if that's easier to understand. ..or better, like the machine guns the support class use in the game battlefield, those are LMGs

It is called a heavy machine because it is a heavy weapon and it's a machine gun so hmg.

Editado por MysticalSnurtle: 10/25/2015 4:41:41 AMYou're right just looked it up. The Chiefs heavy machine gun looks a lot bigger than I remember :P As far as super human strength... I'll leave that for another time XD Am sure Titans also have that super human strength. EDIT: though I'd say some of the machine guns in destiny def. seem like a hybrid between medium and heavy machine guns.

What's the difference between a 249 AR and a 240B AR? Both are ARs and considered LMGs. AR meaning automatic rifle. (Rifling effect greatly increased accuracy to traditional machine guns). The 249 is considered a suppression and anti-personnel weapon. The 240 a material and/or vehicle weapon. 249 = 5.56mm ammunition. 240 = 7.62mm ammunition. The 249 is a single man crew to operate, where as the 240 is a two man crew usually unless mounted to a vehicle. So the question is, does that mean a 240 is aMachine Gun (heavy)? It's two men crews. Both are labeled as LMGs and ARs. By your definition though the nearly 30 pound 240B with heavy loads of ammo and another man assigned for tripod and adjustments/barrel changes would be a Heavy MG.

Editado por IR0N MANT1S: 10/25/2015 4:30:20 AMBoth of those guns are LMG's..and can be operated by a single individual.. though in the 240's case not preferable.. they are LMG's. If it's fixed in place or mounted to a vehicle it's a HMG... P.S.... the 240 is more versatile while the 249 is smaller, lighter and primarily only for anti personnel..

A 249 and 240 can be mounted on Tripod, bipod, vehicle, or assigned to one man. So the definition isn't really clear. By definition a HMG is a crew serviced machine gun. Soooooo Directions unclear, penis stuck in toaster.
