Prison of Elders (32) - Broken Legion / After Action Review

Two hours, seven-ish attempts, and 645 kills later, my fireteam (my 32 titan, a 32 hunter, and a 31 warlock) finally put down the Cabal beast Valus Trau'ug. What a fight this big turtle put up! We didn't cheese the fight, and if there is a way of cheesing it we didn't bother looking. It took us a while to figure out the flow of the engagement, but figure it out we did and managed to come out battered, bruised, bloody... and victorious! For anyone planning on venturing into the prison to hunt this monster down, I provide you with a few things to consider: 1) There will be lots of minions running around shooting at you! Their numbers are (I believe) linked to their leader's health and/or shield level. You can clear them out, and I highly recommend doing so, but once you hit him hard enough to bloody his nose he'll call for reinforcements. 2) Keep moving, from position to position to position! With that many bad guys running around, finding cover is a tricky proposition. You can get some breathing room by moving across the map (quickly and carefully). This has the added benefit of channeling the enemy towards you. They'll move as a clustered group that is a great target for grenades and rockets (though you may want to save the latter). But eventually you'll have to kill the Big Guy, and on that note... 3) His shield switches shortly after you drop it! Solar, arc, and void, it's all there. Make sure that each damage type is represented in your group. Once you've cleared out the lil' guys (or not-so-lil' guys, as the case may be), get your team ready to hit him hard. Drop his shield, hit him with everything you've got, re-position, and start clearing out the troops again! The above are just basic fundamentals for the fight. You'll of course have to use your own judgment to figure out what works for you. The only really good location we found that qualifies as a strongpoint in this battle is across the map to the left as you enter. There is an open area of the curve-walled tunnel with a nearly guardian-high wall that you can (sort of) shoot over. The minions will eventually come in to drive you out, but Trau'ug really can't hit you well from where he'll be lumbering around. That being said, no position is completely safe (at least that we found), so don't hesitate to beat feet for calmer shores. If you have found a different strategy that works, or have some other helpful tips, please leave a reply so that we can all benefit. Knowledge wins battles, after all. Good luck, guardians, and keep your Light close!
