Yeah, it felt like the worst “step forward” in display tech I’ve ever had. I thought going with the HDR screen and One X would really enhance my Destiny experience. Meh… it is an absurdly dark HDR. And I’ve spent a lot of time fine tuning the HDR settings. Still very dark.

Still very dark.[/quote] The whole point of HDR is to get very dark and very bright in places. That’s literally what it does: High Dynamic Range. So, when HDR is working correctly, some places will be very dark (like Banshee’s shop). It can be jarring if you’re used to the standard video game technique of turning up the brightness to see into dark corners. There’s also an issue with Destiny’s implementation where (at least on XBX) you have to turn HDR off on the console, boot up Destiny fresh (no auto restart) and set brightness and contrast to their recommended values, completely exit the game, turn console HDR back on, and then set the white balance how you want, but the black level has to be at 50%. Don’t adjust the black level; use the white balance to tune the display. The Series X update completely fixed HDR for me, and it’s amazing. But, yeah, the shadows are darker and the highlights are brighter—as they’re supposed to be. But the cool thing is now you can pull out your ghost as a light source. So if HDR truly isn’t working for you on Series X, your settings are the problem.

I understand the point of HDR and I have set up the HDR using that technique. Destiny has absurd dark areas considering we don’t have control over when our ghosts turn their light on. If we had control over the flashlight on our ghosts, this wouldn’t be a problem. Navigating some sections without the ghost light is next to impossible. I’m happy to hear your experience on the Series X is better than the One X.

Sorry, I misread yours as the Series X. I’ve heard the One X still has issues. Though I think it’s kind of cool to pull out the ghost for light in certain areas.

Yeah, I feel like I’ve spent a good amount of time “tuning” the HDR, and still have trouble in dark zones. I like using the Ghost for light and wish we had a flashlight function on the ghost. Even if it was a mod and cost energy to put on.

I feel ya. I play on a home theater, so I set it up on the console, my receiver, and the projector. Couldn’t figure it out forever, until I realized that for HDR, the HDMI Dynamic Range setting needs to be counterintuitively set to Limited in order to get the full range of dark and light. 🧐
