Raids are meant to be an amazing experience to have with a group of guardians. Mechanics, giant epic boss battles, and crazy cool weapons/armor.
This may be your opinion, but it doesn't hold water. The whole GAME is about giant bosses, epic battles, and cool drops.
There's literally no reason to not allow for matchmaking for Raid. It will at least give people the chance to get somewhere instead of nowhere. This by all means doesn't mean forcing EVERYONE into a matchmaking queue, if you have a 4-6 stack, by all means, it should still let you do your own thing, but there should be an option for Matchmaking, and also , a reward for sharing to encourage more people to take the sherpa route.
They just acknowledged that this is an MMO now. That means more grindyness and more activities geared towards teams.
MMO doesn't have to mean " more grind" that's entirely up to the developer. But what they are doing is over-extending their demand for player TIME. There's almost zero reward unless you can sacrifice unreasonable amounts of time to a game. Whereas games like WoW people can basically get away with 1 day of playing and a raid night and be done for a week.
I’m wondering what you want them to do? When did they promise a ton of solo content? Why did you think this game would be different from D1?
Some announcements way back they had stated they were working at getting solo players into more endgame content.
Running around on a planet unable to be a part of the actual raids is not an adequate "end game" experience for people stuck as solos.
On PC their Join system didn't exist till roughly half a year into the game. By that point they had lost most of their players, and had severely underestimated how PC players play games. Matchmaking as the primary has always been preferred before requiring pre-building a team. Bungie honestly should have known better.
It takes almost nothing to open up Raids for matchmaking much like anything else. This isn't a change in direction, its cloning a gametype to a UI element and hooking it into their raids. I'm just going to assume at this point I'm the only one here with actual work history in development.
There’s no reason to be playing solo unless it’s medical/psychological.
Yeah, Id say I made a safe assumption.

Matchmaking would be the biggest mess for the raid. And honestly, wouldnt change much. And if mechanics are not for you, leave, that literally what separates raids from everything else.
-
The 'mechanics" are repetitive puzzles with simple setups. The only thing locking people out is how terrible their grouping system is. Add Matchmaking, add an integrated LFG system that actually encourages people to group up beforehand, also offer bonuses for sherpas, and youll see a lot more people stick around to do end game content and complete said end game content.

Yet I can see why people seem to fail something so simple.

If you don't want matchmaking you don't use match making... its as simple as that. And integrated LFG and a better chat system to support it with better public spaces would go so much further. These are concepts as old as the genre and they ignored it because they catered to streamers and tryhards which basically killed anyone's interest in sticking around past the main story season 1.
