im pretty sure that in terms of raw processing power, intel is better than amd overall hence the higher price point. however, if you are just gaming, you could probably get the Ryzen 7 2700x. it is the highest end gaming processor offered by amd and it is cheaper than something such as the Intel i7 7700k, which is obviously very good but you are wasting money if you are only using it for gaming. same with amd’s Ryzen Threadripper series; extremely powerful processor, but very unnecessary if you are just gaming. the ryzen 7 2700x would be a great pairing for your gtx 1080. there would be little to no bottlenecking on either end as both of these are very high end components. it goes for $400 CAD on newegg, compared to the i7 7700k counterpart which goes for $520 CAD on the same site. if you want to cut down on price, you can go for the first gen ryzen 7 cpus (1700 and 1700x) which are $300 CAD and below and are still very good processors. however, if you want the absolute best of the best for your purposes, get the 2700x. whatever you get, make sure your motherboard supports that generation of ryzen architecture (first or second gen)

  • i was actually thinking of getting the 2700x. i just did not want to write it in my original post so that people wont be biased in their answer. i like that it has a good cooler aswell. what got me hesitating is that ive read some posts that a i7 3770 is still extremely good and upgrading would hardly benefit me. i dont really believe that but i just want to make sure. r7 2700x would be a huge upgrade right? let alone the ddr 4 @ around 3200 id be buying with it

  • i would say it would be a big enough upgrade. i just looked at the specs of the i7 3770, and saw that it is limited to 1600 speed ddr3 which is pretty bad. the clock speed and such of the processor is very good, being the best of the 3rd gen i7 line, but that line is years outdated hence the lack of support for faster ram. because of that alone, i think the 2700x is the move for you since it has no limit on ram compatibility as far as i know. you wouldn’t benefit as much in terms of processing speeds, but more ram at nearly double the clock speed would be very beneficial.

  • good luck, as far as i know processing units (both graphics and computing) don’t tend to drop a bunch on cyber monday. you may be able to find something if you have a good local store you can go to on friday that would carry it, but not many store retailers carry it as far as i know. see if there are any sales on monday, but if not you can probably find a good 2nd gen ryzen motherboard since you will also need that and i believe the less expensive components tend to be the ones that get the best sales.
