You should always be doing Normal first for any raid. Do this version until you have enough experience with the mechanics and then go to Hard.
Doing Hard Mode first with no experience is just going to waste the time of those who actually took the time to learn.

Only reason I went to go hard was because a couple of the fireteam said it's a waste of tine because you only get year one loot. Tbh I wanted to do exactly what you said to get experience, thanks for the advice
