ESO is an MMO with ES trimmings. Not an ES game which is also an MMO. I think that's where a lot of folks were disappointed.
TES: Skyrim is a true single player ES game.
If you are looking for a great ES experience, go with Skyrim. If you want a MMO with ES like vibes, check out ESO.

Pretty much on point. ESO is a great MMO that has plenty of ES lore (books, quests, characters, etc.) however plays much different than the previous ES games. If you enjoy MMOs and dig ES then this game is for you. Skyrim is a fantastic ES game very much in the same vain of the previous iterations. It has a great story, LOADS of things to do and with the addition of mods you will be playing this game for a long time. In regards to a newbie of ES I don't think you can go wrong with either. There are no requirements for knowing the previous games to thoroughly enjoy them however the lore is intriguing and you can find dozens of sites that you can read up on.
