Adding matchmaking to ANYTHING without making it an option is absolute nonsense! Matchmaking should be offered for those who wish to use the service but not make obligatory. How can Bungie think its best to be completely one way or the other. Will I be able to do weekly strikes, strikes from the Director, or nightfall solo or with friends when ROI comes out? This is a HUGE aspect of the game in which I do not get to participate. With no new story and no new patrol and no chance of reward other than the odd legendary engram I get after playing 15-20 hours a week there's really nothing to keep me interested in playing. I don't want to solo the new raid but I'm never going to attempt it with a bunch of randoms. Maybe you should include matchmaking for those who want it and allow those of us who want to, and can, strike on our own the option to do so.

It just seems dumb to matchmake outside the game.

I would agree except for completing something with complex puzzles or where teamwork is absolutely necessary. I still maintain that forcing myself and others to play with randoms is not the way the issue should have been addressed. If I can't even speak to the people in on the same map with or participating in a public event with then why should I be forced to work with others I don't know during a private event I initiate myself? Matchmaking should be optional, period. If a person can not initiate an event with their own fireteam or solo or have matchmaking as an OPTION then it shouldn't exist. What was the reasoning behind this absolute? When people complained about no matchmaking why wasn't it added as an option instead of an obligation?

Yes. Optional. There's nothing stopping you from going in any game type with your own Fireteam.
