A guardian is merely a dead thing powered by light. Its ghost is a conduit between it and the light.
The ghost survives off light, and feeds some to its guardian. This allows the guardian to have all their abilities (regeneration, dexterity, agility, grenades, supers, etc)
If you drain a ghost completely of its light however; it is gone. Now the guardian no longer has any of their abilities, and next time they die is the last.
(The only way to drain a ghost of its light is by an immense amount of darkness feeding on it with no light to replace what has been stolen)

What if there was once a guardian that lost their ghost but they were such a bad ass that it didn't matter. Like Deadpool and robocops love child.

You just described toland, eris, and or dredgen yor. Toland (he understood the void and darkness so much he Crossed the veil; therefore, no longer has a ghost. But is still alive) Eris because she survived (if she dies again though, game over) And dredgen because (the darkness stole him)
-
All Eris did was hide in her spider hole and waited for all the hive to attend their weekly pizza party so she could slip away
-
She still survived thanks to toland's journals. A hell of a lot more she can say compared to 2/3s of her fireteam, and the thousands that fell at the great disaster.
and I don't blame her. The hive make the best pizza
You can also destroy the core, I believe. One of the cards on the moon mentions that Crota killed a Guardian with a knife made from it's ghost.
-
I don't recall seeing that. But then again, it is possible. And considering it seems like Crota's shadow killed the ghost first, the logic still stands that the ghost has to die first
and may I just say that has to be the worst way to go
Getting killed by a knife made of your life long companion? Yeah, not high on my list of ways to die.
