I'm watching this video, for the second time, about what marriage is. First off it is in defence of traditional marriage but the thing that stood out to me about it is that religion had no part in it. Thats been one of my biggest problems with why people say gay marriage is wrong. It felt like there was no actual reason. Anyway my friend described it as the most logical argument for marriage. Ill post the video in a bit but I want your thoughts on what you believe marriage to be.
So question: what is marriage? What role or purpose does it play?

I like the part where you took this out of #offtopic so people would stop shitting on your thread.

He hits the nail on the head. "Traditional" marriage is a result of societal evolution.
-
How do you compare your video with something like this?

Edited by Elrond Hubbard: 1/20/2014 11:57:57 PMHe's wrong. Reproduction is not and will never be a requirement of marriage. And if that's wrong, let's go ahead and invalidate the marriages of any couple that has never had children. (Won't happen, because the government can't grant a right and then take it away) The "consequences of redefining marriage" argument amounts to a slippery slope fallacy. And he's basically saying orphans are better off being orphans than having two same-sex parents who care for them. There are zero logical arguments against same-sex marriage.
Anyway my friend described it as the most logical argument for marriage.
>Implying there are any logical arguments against human rights.
marriage exists to unite a man and a woman as husband and wife
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_same-sex_unions Nice try, faggot, this definition is exclusive to Christianity. Pre-Christian Europe and pre-colonial North America disagree.

Edited by RC5908: 1/20/2014 10:01:48 PMa formal union between two consenting adults.

He even goes so far as to say "look how many states have amended their constitution to say marriage is one man and one woman." Good job on the logical fallacies, bro.
-
"[x] children born out of wedlock" since when is that a bad thing? Unmarried parents don't make bad parents, as he is suggesting. single parents make it harder for children to be raised properly, yes. "out of wedlock" doesn't mean "single parent"
-
I just finished the video. His whole argument is based on children. Come back when you have something better.
-
You've gotten awfully quiet since you posted the video, OP...
-
It definitely has physics involved.
-
first two minutes of the video (paraphrased): "marriage is for reproduction, children deserve mother and father." i stopped watching there. marriage doesn't exist with the intent of producing children and children raised by gay couples fare just as well as children raised by straight couples.

...Duh...

Fun fact: Most states in the USA base their matrimonial law on old British common law. The arrangement is a business one, and the spiritual aspects weren't even accepted in a court. Basically, when you get married, the minister or JOP is acting as an agent of the state, and all of the ceremony is just there for you and your guests.

Edited by twenty2020: 1/20/2014 10:54:15 PM"Marriage exists to unite a man and a woman as husband and wife to then be equipped to be mother and father to any children that that union produces." But...you can have kids without being married. You can also be married without having kids. "children deserve a mother and a father" laughable argument. I can't take this guy seriously.

don't really give a shit if you have 8 wives and 2 husbands and have giant -blam!- fests every 69th day-just don't expect me to join in

A spiritual and/or legal contract in which two people who love each other commit to each other in the eyes of their religion and nations law. For lack of better words.

Edited by Legend To None: 1/20/2014 10:18:26 PMWell for gays, it's just to be recognized as a couple by that state. Traditional Marriage is a marriage between god. So it doesn't involve gays, that's like sinning in church
-
Marriage is betting somebody half your shit that you will love them forever.

1.
a formal union between two consenting adults.
2. It's a commitment to be together and to be able to depend on one another for life. In other cases it's to get money or other gains.

Foxy?

Edited by twenty2020: 1/20/2014 10:16:53 PMMarriage - the legal union of two adults.
What role or purpose does it play?
There's very little tangible benefit to marriage. You don't need to be married for any real reason. Marriage is not a prerequisite for having a child or anything.
