Director's Cut:Luke Smith, thank you, and I'm sorry.

While the title mentions Luke Smith, I want to say first and foremost that I am sorry to the entire Bungie team. From the community figures taking unrelenting DPS output of my emotion fueled feedback, to the boss man himself, I apologize. My comments in the past have been a mix of my real life situations, and frustration with my own perceived shortcomings of a game I love more than any other I have played before. You didn't deserve that, and I was wrong. The Director's Cut helped me to understand the larger picture of Destiny that expands outside of its own universe and interacts with our own. It's not often that a player like myself, see's the cost of making such a unique and amazing game. Before today, I had no idea that content releases where developed in parallel with other releases. I can't even imagine the amount of focus, and collaboration that is required to bring something like that to completion, let alone maintain the passion for the game. I will say that the monumental grind the team has pushed through makes me think of them as battle hardened veterans of the franchise. I appreciate your efforts. Your game has done more for me than just have fun. It has been connected me to people much like myself who I've made my best friends, and continues to introduce me to new and amazing guardians, all of which share the same love for the game as I do. It has even helped me through some of the tougher moments of my life. The work you have done, does not go underappreciated. Luke, I like the Director's Cut as is actually. It feels more personal when written in letter format. I do have one suggestion though. Through some of my friends who have been invited to the studio themselves, I have learned that the people who make the game are just that. People. People who I'd like to meet one day and get to know. People who I feel would be much more appreciated if we got to see more of them than just the content the make for the game. What I'm suggesting is: maybe do something like a "employee of the month" video interview so that players can see the faces of the people that helped to make the game something we love. I know you do this somewhat with the ViDocs and streams. I was thinking maybe something could be more focused around the team member themselves. Just a thought. I mean this when I say it: Thank you for being transparent and taking the time to explain thoroughly why you and the team make the decisions that you do. It is what I have been wanting to see for a long while now. I think you did an amazing job so thank you. To know that some of the things we want to see in the game are being not just heard, but acknowledged and also mutually felt need to be done. Even if somethings are not reasonably possible, at least I know you gave some thought to them. The person I was before with all spiraling emotions and negative comments is no longer me. I have been for sometime trying to see the lighter side of things. It has been so much nicer than holding on to my frustrations. I'm not perfect but I am making a tremendous effort (with much success I'll add). Here's to the bright future of the game with all it's accomplishments, and lessons learned. Let's combine our light and push back the Darkness someday. One more time, I am sorry for the past, and thank you. Keep honing your light, Valiant

  • Why? The funny thing is Luke Smith complains that they're exhausted and burnt out but... from what? There's barely any content in the annual pass and the menagerie is a just a 6 player strike with raid mechanics and crap loot. The Forge is barely content, with a timer (with more not-so-hot loot). Gambit is horrid all around. The Drifter needs to take a long walk off a short pier. PvP is great if you like watching the enemy team teleport away when they're near death. Shadowkeep looks a lot like the Moon in D1, recycled. And then Luke had the brass pair to complain about "mean" feedback. After the lies, xp throttling and everything else they've done over the years. But they still persist in bad choices spearheaded by Smith: No matchmaking for end game content (the "best" content in Destiny no less), pvp quest lines for story content, nerfs, catering to the try-hard elitists, etc. Destiny is a fractured game, so they're constantly trying to balance and create content for roughly 3 groups of players who all want different things. Until they decide what kind of game they want to make and for what type of player, nothing will ever really change. Their go to solution for years has been "lets just force everyone to play how we want them to, then they'll see how fun it is". It's not working. And it never will. Luke "throw money at the screen" Smith can say what he wants, but Bungie has a recent history of lying and deceptive behavior, as well as ignoring feedback until their bottom line is affected. Maybe they're trying to turn that around. But it ultimately won't mean anything if they can't figure out what type of game they're making or who they're making it for.

    • So let me get this straight. This post says that Bungie openly has a problem meeting content delivery without burning out their team; that Bungie is incapable of encounter design AND managing buffs, builds, and weapons without breaking their design paradigms; that restricting the amount of powerful drops is a thing that should happen to make them more meaningful; that there's a decent chance given how they aren't sell this game to Joe Walmart they're gonna triple down on Gambit Prime; that an ornament being sold for money paid for a mission and that they're likely going to increase monetization since people say it works... A post says all these things and it's supposed to make me happy about the future of the game? Christ.

      • One thing that sticks in my mind from the Director’s Cut is how the sales of Whisper of the Worm ornaments were enough to cover the dev costs for the Outbreak Perfected mission (that I believe took a small team 2-3 months to create). At first glance that seems great. However look just a little bit deeper and it gets murky. People bought Whisper ornaments because they enjoyed using the gun, and wanted it to look different from default. That’s great, however some months later Bungie nerfed Whisper, in the same way they had previously nerfed the D1 equivalent. This change poses some questions. If Whisper had been released in it’s nerfed state would so many people still have purchased the ornaments? As Bungie already had experience with this gun and its subsequent nerf in D1, then why would they allow the original spec in D2 ? Were they so naive/incompetent that they simply did not realise it would need nerfed again ? Or were they very aware of it, but hoped people would spend on the ornaments because Whisper was so powerful ? They could just nerf it later on, once there had been enough sales anyway. There’s a lot of things like that in what Luke said. Seemingly positive remarks and statements that sadly don’t stand up against any scrutiny. The same applies to Armour 2.0. The idea sounds like a step forward, but look more deeply into it and the potential problems are plain to see.

8 years on Bnet and this is your first post ever on this forum. I don't care if I get downvoted or not and I don't care if the OP has an explanation or not. It's not anything person either. This is a little too suspicious knowing a lot of people are not happy with how the game has been handed and have been expressing their opinion about it on the "directors cut".

Are we off the Hate Like Smith Bandwagon? I read his "Director Cut" and what I took from it is we should prepare for less content than we had in the last yr since Forsaken dropped Also more nerfs/buff (goodbye WoR),more eververse items, and less power engrams I felt like it was a precursor for excuses when content dries up and is not enjoyable.

His post helped you understand the bigger picture? Can you help me understand it then because to me he just went back and forth on a bunch of very specific topics and never really talked about a “big” picture at all other than he wants Destiny to be an “action MMO”. No discussion about what that means or how to get there in the grand scheme of the Destiny universe, just a stream of consciousness dump about everything they want to fix from the last few seasons. All it told me was that after five years, Bungie still hasn’t hit its stride and started smoothly rolling out well curated and balanced expansions. This game continues to feel like they’re just making it up as they go along, and every time they hit the reset button it’s with the same unconvincing message that this is the start of a “new direction” for Destiny. But hey... at least they’re buffing scout rifles.

Look, a lot of us want to be positive, but the general expression of them saying it's difficult doesn't move me, of course it is hard, of course we are hard on them, there are some assholes, but there are fair critics too. The pursuits tab move was a mistake, there was no reason for it, and they didn't tell us about it early enough to get any feedback on it, so they chose to get ripped apart about it on launch day, that's their fault. I'm sorry that it happened, but it did happen and now we got to learn, D1 already had quests separated from bounties, and now they're doing it again finally, except we don't even know it's still going to be in the director or the character inventory (the one it should be in), TTK pretty much nailed it, there is no need to reinvent the wheel. Part of their issue is the radio silence, they keep doing this, so we keep hammering them whenever they do things that end up not being liked without telling us. People moved on once they acknowledged it, that's all they gotta do when critical feedback rises, because then people know. They are showered with praise anytime they do anything right, and that's fine I guess, but that does not mean we can just excuse and forget the bad. There's no need to be openly sorry when you need to be critical. I'm sure we all are when we are critical anyway, it doesn't need to be stated. Being critical pretty much requires you to actually care about what you're critizing or else you sound like crap. Tough love, you can call it.

                  • Bungie has told us that this game is not for "Johnny 2 sticks", that we either need to embrace the endless, meaningless grind or find another game. They don't care that we think at times it's a chore/job rather than a fun, meaningful journey. That endless, nonsense grinds are wearing us out. They don't care if you’re a parent, or have a job or other obligations, that if you don't have the time to play, this game is not for you. Ok, we accept that or stop playing. Then they have the nerve to put out this garbage post about making the game is too much of a grind, their team members are getting worn out, that they don't have the time to complete things... Uhmm, isn't that what they just told us that they don't care about when it's us complaining, but they want us to feel sorry for them??? And by the way, WE ARE PAYING THEM! Like I posted on another thread, this is priceless....

Poor Luke Smith. On his six/seven figure plus salary must be really stressful job. Trying to find a balance between how many items to sell in Eververse, how many staff to allocate to Eververse and encouraging his comms staff to provide more than one feedback per week on the bungie forum must be extremely difficult. “My wallet is too small for my hundred dollar bills and i can’t get my favourite Cuban cigar through customs, geez my life is hard, please feel sorry for me”

Cartman is Luke Smith, pc principal was activision and all the community managers and ppl in that department are butters.
