What would raising taxes on the rich accomplish? (Numbers inside)

So raising taxes on the rich, what would that do exactly? Here we go, I'll try to limit the quotes to the most pertinent info. But please give the actual article a read.
To get the most accurate picture possible, throw in all the scraps of income, from the most obvious (like wages, interest and dividends) to the least (like employer contributions to health plans, overseas earnings and growth in retirement accounts). According to that measure —used by the Tax Policy Center, a joint project of the Urban Institute and the Brookings Institution — the top 1 percent includes about 1.13 million households earning an average income of $2.1 million. Raising their total tax burden to, say, 40 percent would generate about $157 billion in revenue the first year. Increasing it to 45 percent brings in a whopping $276 billion. Even taking account of state and local taxes, the average household in this group would still take home at least $1 million a year. If the tax increase were limited to just the 115,000 households in the top 0.1 percent, with an average income of $9.4 million, a 40 percent tax rate would produce $55 billion in extra revenue in its first year. That would more than cover, for example, the estimated $47 billion cost of eliminating undergraduate tuition at all the country’s four-year public colleges and universities, as Senator Bernie Sanders has proposed, or Mrs. Clinton’s cheaper plan for a debt-free college degree, with money left over to help fund universal prekindergarten. A tax rate of 45 percent on this select group raises $109 billion, more than enough to pay for the first year of a new $2,500 child tax credit introduced by Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida. Move a rung down the ladder and expand the contribution of those in the 95th to 99th percentile — who earn on average $405,000. Raising their total tax rate to 30 percent from a quarter of their total yearly income would generate an additional $86 billion. That’s enough to cover the cost over eight years of repealing the so-called Cadillac Tax on high-cost health plans, which Senator Sanders and Mrs. Clinton have endorsed. A 35 percent share produces $176 billion — roughly the amount that the Federal Highway Administration has estimated is needed each year to improve conditions significantly on major urban highways. Alternatively, those tax increases could be used to help reduce government borrowing: Some combination of those raises could go a long way toward wiping out this year’s estimated federal deficit of $426 billion.

...current tax law makes no distinction between, say, investing abroad, speculating in land or building a new factory. A better approach, he said, is to say: “We’ll give you generous deductions if you invest in America.” Eliminating the preferential rates on capital and dividends would generate $1.34 trillion over the next 10 years, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/10/17/business/putting-numbers-to-a-tax-increase-for-the-rich.html?smid=fb-share&_r=0&referer= ^^^^ Full article, complete with references for figures given. • In the uk we tax our rich quite heavily. Well, much more heavily than the u.s. seems to. You know what? They haven't all given up working or moved abroad!

      • Tax the rich? We would probably see none of it, because it would go down the drain like the rest of our economy.

        • In the U.S. 1% of the population pays 80% of the taxes, and 40% pay 15% of the taxes and the rest (~59%) pay little to none of the taxes. How about flat tax instead of this tax the rich bullshit?

          • Humans are inherently lazy creatures. If they can take advantage they will. That's been proven by our political agendas here in the states and by a lead party member who might become the next president. If you want to tax someone who works hard that's all good and dandy but the top 1 percent can't pay for the other 99. Why would someone continue to work hard if others were piggy backing off of you? Would you work hard? Or would you just say screw it and do what everyone else is doing? Taxes become a real issue when everyone is shouting just tax everyone the same flat rate, but that leads to an even bigger problem within the system itself. Cut spending on military and stop policing the world and acting as a good cop when it's really just all about control, power, and wealth. Those with more money have more power. It is estimated that the United States spends more in military agendas than the top 25 other high powered countries combined and the kicker is 23 of them our the United States allies. Why is it we spend billions abroad but not within our own nation. I digress. Taxes look good with on paper but they're a pain to actually work with.

                • Abolish the Federal income tax. And the "Federal" reserve. The income tax is unconstitutional it's forced but is not a flat rate. I'd even be fine with a flat rate income tax, but happier with none. But I digress.

                        • I might (will) get slack for this, but raising the taxes for the rich solely is wrong. Ideally, if someone has more than they need, they should share it; but that idea is only good on paper (it's basically communism and that doesn't work, no matter how much we want it to). Maybe the rich people don't "deserve" that money. Really, there's a market for overpriced garbage and it's just wasteful spending that could be used for something else. However, whether it was them or their parents, somebody worked hard for that money. That money belongs to them and it's their choice to spend it however they want. Even if it was money acquired through loopholes or exploits, that's still their money; they put effort into finding a way to get money and accepted the risk involved with it. TL;DR don't take what's not yours because you want it.
I'm pretty broke btw, so I'm not saying this to protect my shekels
• Taxes have a purpose of stabilizing the general and public wellbeing. If the tax, by whatever means to acquire, does not enhance quality of life, then the tax is illegitimate and thus a crime. Yes, I believe over, or under, taxing is a crime. Tax is absolutely essential to maintain civil order, so when it obstructs its purpose by not giving back to those who put in it is wrongful. Taxing the rich more does good to an extent because it enhances those the rich rely upon to uphold their status, while opening the door for others to become rich as well. Poor people shouldn't be able to sit around and do nothing and scrape by with handouts, but they should at least have a nice place to sit in the company of those who do contribute.

                              • Where do people get the idea that all rich people work hard and that all poor people don't work hard? Most wealth is inherited. They didn't work hard, most were born into rich families in rich neighbor hoods with rich schools. Of course they're highly likely to become rich because of the circumstances they were born in and the money left behind by their parents.

So just because you're a more intelligent person and not a total dumb-blam!- you get punished for be successful? I don't know about you, but that doesn't sound right to me. If the government did its job right, tax rates would be going down.

                                      • This is a good topic. I don't think they have enough taxes in the 1% but that is not the issue. I believe the issue can be traced to the people in the bottom tier of the economic chain. So much is spent subsidizing low wage workers that it takes from the middle class and hurts them without much benefit to the bottom tier. More needs to be done to make our assistance programs get people from the low end back to where they can be middle class. But more taxes on the super rich will only lead to them being smarter about their money taking it offshore.

So, in the long run, what will happen is the top earners will pay for a bunch of educated (free education), healthy (free health care) people that can't get a job (because any money used by the the top earners to normally go to expanding the economy) will sit in their free housing eating their free food watching free internet/tv services. And THAT is the society you want? Any desire to become someone important, invent, to do better, etc will be removed because everything will be provided for free! If I was a top earner, I'd say "screw you" and leave. Then where will you dreamers be? YOU people that agree that taking, stealing, robbing ANYTHING that you didn't earn, YOU are the greedy ones! Where in the world do you think that taking anything from someone else just because they have more than you think is a great idea, are worthless scum. Get off your buts and sweat a little. Ya f-ing wussies are too weak both mentally and physically to take care of yourselves and be responsible. Bunch of spoiled cry-babies! And you mr/ms Britton, if you spent half the time that you waste on dreaming of your so-called perfect utopia where everyone can sit and sing Kum-ba-la, you would be a better person because when/if you ever grow-up, you would contribute to our society rather than thinking of ways to tear it down.
