If you care about Destiny you have to read this article [Go read the update]

Sorry for the click-baity title but this is pretty serious. If you want to talk depreciation this isn't what I'm talking about at all. Edit: I also encourage you to sign this petition as it intersects well with this thread. Who knows maybe it will help. Edit 2: I'm hearing threads are being deleted. If you wanna be really cool copy this post in a word document and feel free to paste it as a new thread if it disappears. Don't spam existing threads because that's annoying. Edit 3: Deej has commented that year one players will get "something better" than the collector's edition items and to look forward to the weekly update. Should be interesting to see how this goes down. (Dawn of the Second Day) update 7/11 employee flyer. I encourage you to read this too. "Destiny cons-- are used to paying a premium for downloadable content similar to this quest" In this article, eurogamer interviewed Luke Smith about the worries players have expressed about the taken king both in price points ($40 =/=£40) and in collector's edition exclusives (three armor shaders, exclusives emotes, and continuous XP granting exotic class items) that are only available for players willing to shell out $80, most of which is for content they likely already own. His answers to these questions were illuminating to say the least and rather than give cliffs notes I want you to read it yourself now. Think about what he says. I hope it leaves the same feeling in your gut that it left in mine. When destiny first launched there were three editions: the vanilla game the digital guardian edition and the ghost edition. The vanilla game was the vanilla game, simple enough. The ghost edition was for the high rollers who wanted something nice: their very own red dinklebot and an in game version of it. Cool. For those who wanted all of the in game content but didn't really want to drop more money on physical items there's the digital guardian edition which came with all of the in game items the ghost edition had. Now we have a new release but with a radically different setup. The $40 expansion for owners of both expansions is analogous to the vanilla destiny package from above. Completely fine. The $60 legendary edition is fine. New players should have a bundle for them, this kind of thing happens all the time and while I'm kinda suprised at how cheap it costs, they still have to be competitive against the heavy hitters shipping this season. The collector's editions are where we run into trouble. The physical rewards are analogous to the ghost edition: you either want the strange coin or you don't (well gamestop is out of physical copies so I guess this is no longer a choice). That's fine. The word collector has a certain long term investment attached to the name semantically so you would think it was made with current players in mind. But it comes with the legendary edition which is intended for new players... Alright that's fine I have my ghost I don't really mind the physical items so let's see the equivalent of the digital guardian edition because those shaders look nice, the emotes will liven up the game and the XP class items will lessen the grind and I wouldn't mind spending the halfway point between the $40 and the $80 editions. Except the digital edition of the collector's edition also costs exactly the same as the physical edition: $80 (for less content as the digital version obviously doesnt include the physical items). The digital guardian editon came as a halfway point between the the two editions and included the full destiny experience in game. That was important. Now current players are given two options: go all in on the $80 version, buy what you already own for the exclusive in game items, or buy the $40 version and watch as new players and current players who have more money than brains bypass the grind with their new XP capes for the rest of the game. Not allowing current players the option to buy the taken king by itself with the complete in game content is price gouging. It's also making them artifically inflate their dlc sales as players are buying multiple copies of the dlc that they will never use because guess what? They already own it. And then when an interviewer brings up these frustrations, this is the response we're given. If you care at all you have to be vocal about this. If this succeeds without contest it will be how companies sell content going forward. I'm not calling for a boycott but don't throw your money at them blindly. If you are content with the status quo ask yourself why you enjoy paying more for content you already own? I refuse to pay for what I already have and you should too.

  • See I used to think this but companies do this literally ALL-THE-TIME! Example Ford, Chevy, Dodge all do this with their performance cars almost every two years or so. You want the new faster mustang? You still have to buy another mustang and then pay more money for the extra features that come with it. Ultimately the choice to get it is up to you and how badly you want the new emotes or whatever. P.s and signing a petition to force a video game maker to provide you with an armor shader, sparrow, xp bonus, whatever is the most brattiest thing I've ever heard of.

The first dlc was weak but at least it had a raid, the second dlc is incredibly boring and does not offer anything better either weapon or armour wise over what you get from VoG or Crota. Of all the gear I've gotten from the new expansion, none of it has replaced my favourite load outs of fatebringer, black hammer/felwinters lie, gjallohorn set up for pve and thorn/red death, felwinters lie, against all odds for pvp. I'll probably pass on the taken king as the first two put together didn't offer anywhere near $40 with of content, so I highly doubt the taken king will offer that much either. Besides, I'll be too busy playing Batman, Star Wars, and f1 2015 to care about the taken king.

    • I happily reserved and paid for my collector's edition. It all boils down to perceived value. I will have a huge amount of hours of entertainment from this expansion. This is because this is my go-to game and when it's all said and done, I will be paying a miniscule amount per hour of play. My perceived value is that it is worth the money. If yours isn't then don't buy it. Your wallet speaks louder than your words. If you choose not to buy it based upon your convictions of worth then I'm sorry. I have a feeling you'll be missing out on fun times. For everyone who says they can't afford it I call BS. You obviously have enough means to own the console, game, and required Internet connection. If you can't save a little less than $15 a month (or €20 for you Europeans), than you obviously have different, more important priorities elsewhere. Stop crying about the cost of a game. In the end, if there is collectively enough people who don't buy the game based on cost, they will lower it so that they can move their product. Actions speak louder than words... especially when those words come off as entitled complaining.

        • It's clear they were both messing with each other. If you read it one way it sounds horrible, but I've seen Luke Smith's other interviews and this isn't bad. The interviewer even said he enjoyed this interview the most. Is the price right? Maybe not, but Luke Smith is alright with me. Leave him be.

The part about "more money than brains" makes you sound like a douche, but I agree to some extent. I've told Bungie I wasn't happy, but as it currently stands, the only way to get the physical items was to pre-order at GameStop. I don't like supporting GameStop and there should be a CE that doesn't force players to re-buy content they already have. I protected myself by pre-ordering. It's getting old seeing children on here tell men and women how to spend the money they worked for. It's everyone's right as a consumer to do what they want. I'll use the extra codes I have for Destiny and Expansions I & II to bring a new Guardian into the world of Destiny. If I choose not buy Taken King or my CE I'll be punishing myself, not Bungie.

            • I see a lot of people talking about the money and saying things like " You're a scrub because you can't afford $80." Or "I am buying it because Destiny is the best game and $80 for this much content is worth it to me, save up some money if you can't afford it and stop whining". To me it is not a financial issue. I have bought the game and the previous DLC four times. I have bought a copy of each for my wife and myself for both the PS4 and the Xbox One so I have already put $400 in this game and have absolutely no regrets. This is an amazing game. I would have no trouble sinking another $320 into the game (4xCE DLC) if it were not for that interview. What I took away from the interview was that Bungie talked about the pricing and decided that they have people addicted to the game and there is a portion of their player base that is distracted by shiny objects and they can take advantage of this by putting everything in the CE and saying "hey if you want these exotic class items and weapons and emotes you need to repurchase the game" because not only does this maximize profits it also artificially inflates how many copies of the game they sold. Bungie could have just as easily made the following pricing TTK DLC - $40 (DLC ONLY) TTK Year One Edition - $60 (DLC only with CE goodies) TTK GOTY Edition - $60 (Destiny, TDB, HOW and TTK only) TTK CE - $80 ( the same as the year one but with the base game and prior DLC) How hard is it to maximize profits and not come across as disrespectful of the legacy players? So my problem is not with money, it is when a developer looks at its legacy players and uses our love of the game and our desire for exotics to take advantage of us financially. This isn't new in the world of business. P.T. Barnum said "there is a sucker born every minute"

            • I worked out it will take me a week to download the 40gb ttk update with my crappy Internet. Does anyone know if I will still get the year 1 bonus, what ever it may be if I buy the whole game again on blueray? Don't want to wait for a week to play and can handle paying a bit extra. Just wanna know if I will get shafted cos I don't buy the digital version. It says the year one pack comes with the digital download and says nothing about it if you buy the whole game again. Thanks

                      • I don't really care I'll buy TTK regardless yeah it feels like a ripoff but at the end of the day I do t care for those e-mites or anything BUT the content of TTK so far Destiny has NOT been a massive disappointment to me like so many other games I pre-ordered that cost me $60-90 per title Destiny is the only game I continue to play, only taking a break because I'm playing ESO
