Raid Matchmaking: THE DEBATE

All Raids should have matchmaking

Old Raids should have matchmaking

No Raids should have matchmaking

Today I pose a question to you! How do you feel about raid matchmaking? Are we fine how we are now? Or would it be a great improvement? LETS DEBATE: Pro Matchmaking Adding matchmaking to the raids will allow for more players to participate in them. No longer will you be forced to use an LFG site or recruitment threads if you don't have any friends online. Just launch the activity and Walla you are in a full fire team! While some would argue that some people would get matched with lower light levels or just players who don't know what to do, this offers for players to teach others each encounter. This would add to the social aspect of the raids even more! And hey, if you still wanted to go on LFG, you can! Nobody is stopping you. If you think the new raids would be too hard, that's okay. We could have matchmaking for VoG and CE but not Kings Fall, because those raids are much lower light level. That way newer players can run through those old raids for the first time much more easily, or old players can do the same just for fun. Problem Solved Con Matchmaking Matchmaking for raids is a terrible idea! This would lead to more frustration than ever. People with very low light levels, inexperienced players, people instantly leaving, players with no mic, these are the players you will be getting matched up with, and the list just goes on and on. Adding a matchmaking system is a waste of Bungies time. With half the player base on LFG and the other half raid matchmaking, wait times will be longer than ever. And when you finally do get a match, people could purposefully troll or go AFK with no one to kick them. How do you expect checkpoints to work? If I have Golgoroth cp , will I only get matched with people at Golgoroth? If so, wait times will be even longer. If not, I might lose my checkpoint and miss out on the Golgoroth loot I still needed to get. Getting through a strike with Randoms is hard enough, doing a raid with Randoms would be near impossible. So what do you think? Should raid matchmaking be a thing or not? What other topics are worthy of a Debate? EDIT: Wow, glad to see everyone voicing there opinions in the comments. This post has gotten more love than I expected. Fun to read these comments.

  • You should be able to choose matchmaking.people with friends or clans dont need matchmaking.solo players like myself do.that way i can at least practice enough so i dont get kicked every 5 minutes like it has been last year.

  • I'd like to see matchmaking enabled for additional PVE activities - All POE, Nightfall, normal mode raids, and at normal mode raid checkpoints. I'd also like to see them introduce the concept of Sherpas in game to help out fireteams in those higher level activites. The idea would be to add some intelligence in this matchmaking to assemble a team of similarly skilled Guardians (eg - similar light levels, similar number of prior completions) to avoid some of the potential pitfalls in auto matchmaking. I'd think SBMM would fit nicely in PVE matchmaking. The idea of the Sherpa comes in where a fireteam consists of players who haven't had that much experience. To qualify as a Sherpa, you must have had 10 (number is arbitrary - follow the concept) number of completions of the given activity. Set up a kiosk in the Tower/Reef where Guardians can check in as an available Sherpa. The matchmaking algorithm places Sherpas on teams if the team's average number of prior completions is less than say 5. Offer the Sherpas some Sherpa rep and enable drops of special Sherpa gear (armor/shaders/emblems/class items) based on completions. Potentially add a special perk for Sherpas who get matched to a fireteam where the average number of prior completions is 3 or less. Examples may be a special perk to perform a total team revive, or to provide the entire team with a few seconds of overshield. Nothing too crazy - just something to keep that inexperienced team moving forward. May be kinda cool.

    • In my opinion it think they should add it with a sort of skill and connection based match making system. I'd want to be matched with players with the same or a little more or less completions as me so I know they are capable to completing it. Also have matching light levels and 2 of each class and a mic requirement. With these stipulations I feel match making could be a success for raids. Without them it could be atrocious and leave room for many many forum posts of complaints and lack of use. I'd also consider and in game lfg.

    • Yes but should be able to set certain parameter for what light/difficulty you are looking for or be optional to turn on. Otherwise I would say no to it.

      • I would not use raid matchmaking personally. That being said, allow for raid match making and let the rest of us continue to use lfg so I can make sure you have a mic. Problem solved.

      • I understand the possible negatives for having a matchmaking but....it's only an option to use. You can still do LFG and make your own fire team. I can't see how having an option that allows single players an easier time to access content is a bad thing. I don't raid at all because it took a few days of trying around 2-3 hours each day on LFG for vault of glass and then the same for kings fall. I don't want to have to spend hours trying to find people so I can go do that.

Ok this topic has been debated since the game has been out. Let's make this very simple: Yes there should be optional matchmaking. Emphasis on OPTIONAL (for all the slow folks out there). If you don't want to use it then fine nothing has changed for you. If you do want to take advantage (warts and all) then you should have the opportunity. Why should this be such a hard concept to understand?

        • It just won't happen. It would be an absolute cluster each and every time. Communication, timing, problem solving are key to these raids. Bungie would have to seriously dumb down the raids for it to work. Horde mode only type scenarios. No thanks.

A simple solution to afk players (or trolls.) would be to implement a vote to kick system which would allow players to vote to kick somebody. 4 out of 6 people would have to vote to kick somebody. That way the majority rules.

            • Stop calling it matchmaking. MM refers to what the crucible or strike playlists have. We don't need that shit. In game LFG is another story (and a totally different idea, mind you.)

              • If it were forced, like strikes, then no, definitely not. Optional? There's really no harm in having optional matchmaking. The real solution here is having an actual LFG system in the game, even at its simplest if it was just a link ingame to open the Bnet recruitment section on your console's browser, that would be enough until something more complex was done.

It's not like that 'bew players have better access to the raids'. Frankly, that's bullshit. You see people complaining each and every day here, instead of going to the LFG, and simply putting up: LFM KF normal, fresh, first time run, newcomers welcome, help appreciated. Please have a mic. It's not hard. Worst case scenario here is they end up with 5 other people who are learning, best case one or two people see the post and go 'oh look, first timers ima help em'.

Honestly, I've had great luck with lfg on this app, I don't think the same could be said of it were matchmaking. If I had gotten match made into a raid for the first time, I think that would have been the only raid I would have ever done. The people who want it come on this app and complain daily, when they could go find a group on here through the lfg in less time than it would take for them to actually post that complaint. I don't understand the all of the complaining.

              • Maybe a fill system would be better? People can go into a queue, only if they've finished the raid, to help out people do the raid. Idk it'd probably be good for those lovely raid guides of the community

              • There are no cons to matchmaking apart from not being able to do it solo or half a team. Optional MM would solve this. Saying you'll be matched with bad players isn't a valid argument as theres nothing sroppimg you from still using a lfg site.

                • All who say 'use lfg' go use lfg! Still an optional raidmaking (with chat) should be possible. You don't want to use it, then don't!

                • I like the MM the old raids. Why not? They are kinda irrelevant to the veterans anyways and it would give the newbs a little raid back ground before moving up to more difficult raids. Who knows, might meet some new friends with MM old raids. Sounds like a good compromise right?

                • Lfg is matchmaking enough, all you get is a sentence or two just saying be experienced, have a gun that might be needed, and what not. Matchmaking would just find you the group faster.

DestinyLfg.com is your matchmaking. If you moan the website is crap and you get ppl who leave or kick you half way through. Matchmaking won't be any different. At least with destinylfg.com you know what light lvl ppl your gonna get or if they've done the raid and have the right weapons. Matchmaking is a stupid idea for lazy ppl hoping to be carried. There is no reason not to use destinylfg.com So with matchmakimg what happens when your half way through the raid and someone leaves! Will it leave you with 5 for the rest or will it try matchmake someone. Who will just leave straight away after finding your half way through the raid! It just won't work
