Just watched the little IGN chat video, Deej...
How am I supposed to become a legend if I don't have a trademark weapon that becomes legendary with me?
"Being married to the same gun for 10 years sounds boring" is YOUR opinion... Some of us like the idea of having a signature weapon, and some of us, myself included, don't like where the art is going on the new weapons and armor or hate enemy-themed gear like The Dark Below kit.
If you make the new weapons and armor solid contenders, people will naturally want to acquire them, rather than being forced to by numbers... And denying a play-style because You think it is boring is wrong.
The real reason the ascension system is mandatory, however, is because this isn't an MMORPG! In a standard MMO, your combat is derived from your class and augmented by the numbers provided by gear. Sure some swords might swing faster or slower, but autoattack is like 2% of your DPS and combat.
This is a shooter with live, twitch firearms... Every single one of which runs a little differently than the next. When a player finds a "favorite" gun, it isn't just his favorite looking weapon, it is his favorite running weapon.
I have run a custom tuned 1911 pistol in competition for almost 12 years now... Are there better modded guns out now?
Yes
Are there a lot of newer guns I have liked and have added to my collections and ran?
Yes
But the bottom line is I cannot run any gun as fast or as hard as that 1911. It has been tuned to my preferences and trained with until it is an extension of my hands, so that's the gun that I drive in matches that count... Just like Fatebringer drivers in Destiny (Or in my case Timepiece and Grim Citizen)
You cant treat Destiny like an MMO because it simply isn't one.
I would actually like an answer about plans for long term ascension, because I am done tomorrow if all my work acquiring, leveling and customizing my characters is gonna be moot in 3 months... I was done before until you announced Etheric Light.
Edit: Great comments, thank you! We are not alone, and we want an answer, Deej!

I only want my praetorian foil to come along with me

You are awesome!!! Did a similar post on #gear. This should happen... period! I love the year one raid gear and it is crazy to simply render it all useless. Please, please, please do this!!!

DeeJ just said that because he doesn't have a choice in what the devs do. It's just tries to make it look good. With games like Destiny (world of Warcraft and MANY mmorpgs) you are meant to get gear use it for a while until you get better gear and do that over and over not just get good gear and be able to keep it for 10 years. This disappoints me because so many people came to Destiny from games like f*cking COD and HALO and they are sh*tty shooter games that have certain OP weapons that people use over and over again. That's not how MMORPGs work so don't hope that Destiny does that.

Edited by jables232: 9/4/2015 1:37:50 PMBump. What was the point of ascending anything? I shouldn't have even bothered.

Its called power creep. Many people want to be enticed to trade in their favorite gun. To do so, it needs to be better - more impact, stronger perks, higher dmg., etc. This may be ok in the short term, but over 10 years, 3 more titles and countless DLC, the balance of power will increase dramatically and spiral out of control. You can't go bigger everytime. You have to stay the course to keep power values under control.

So, its NOT an MMOFPS? (Medium Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter)
Yeah i know it sounds pretty stupid, but i had to since 15 million+ players obviously isn't considered massive
Everything i grinded hours for is worthless now thanks Bungie. Solid reason not to play anymore.
-
Whilst I would like to keep some of my weapons and upgrade them the real reason I think we can't is because that's where they've gotten the extra memory for vault space from.

Bump Deej doesn't play games, I can't respect his feedback on a game he doesn't play..

We are the reason our old gear is getting left behind. We abused guns in pvp and locked the doors to players without Gjallarhorns. Tell me that level of misuse doesn't warrant a harsh solution.
if you need any proof look at trails or crota
Bungie refuses to carry over year one any further because year one weapons at least the vanilla guns were the best. And rather than make new content that's new and fresh, they like to cut off the old gear because they simply don't want to work harder and beat their old creations. Bungie has gotten lazy, and many of you are to blame for buying into activisions micro transactions scheme in games like COD and WOW. They like easy money way too much and for as long as you keep giving the money up, they will keep taking it. Stop buying and demand better quality and service. After all this is a free market, there are options and you can go with the better options until these greedy f@k$ learn they can't simply slap a good brand on something and sell it for outrageous profit, when it cost them a fraction to make.

by signature weapon, do you mean the thorn or tlw everyone uses? maybe not everyone but hardly signature. signatures should be unique. not thorn, party crasher, radeghasts fury. that example is called cookie cutter. maybe not you but data points to this build with minor changes as the norm.

I agree in principle and hope for this moving forward, but the year 1 weapons were too good and need to be left behind.

Whoever we were watching play during that video is without a doubt the worst player I've ever seen in my entire life.
