I noticed the same when I was in South Carolina one time when it snowed. There was no one on the road and people were freaking out in the stores. I thought it was funny until I thought of a hot southern summer and how I would fair.

We got a little bit of salt on the major bridges, but that's about it. And it's not we get practice driving in it seeing as this only happens what feels like every other year.
