There is a lot of chatter in the forums about what, if anything, needs to be done about sniper rifles in PvP. Here, I try to consolidate the options I've seen presented, and to add a couple of my own. Please vote and leave your feedback. Pretty sure a change (not all are "nerfs") is coming, so it's really a matter of communicating to Bungie what we would like it to look like.
Options:
1. D0MINATION suggested that "sway" be added when aiming a sniper rifle. The sway would mimic the movement associated with breathing (after all, when standing still, you can see your Guardian breathing).
2. Anybody who hunts big game or shoots long-range targets knows that when looking through a scope eye strain is very real. For the sake of this game, the suggestion is that (a) you can only hold in aim view for five seconds at a time, and (b) regardless how long you held aim view, as soon as you stop aiming, your aim view is on cool-down for five seconds.
3. PhenomenalFiend suggested that when you're aiming a sniper rifle, if you're hit by a round you are automatically taken out of aim-view. I like this option, as it should be impossible to aim a sniper rifle when taking fire.
4. Self-explanatory
5. Self-explanatory
6. For folks who use snipers in PvP and do not want to see them changed at all.
7. For folks who use sniper rifles in PvE (but rarely in PvP) and don't want to see them changed at all.
And yes, I fully understand that PvP and PvE weapon changes should be separated, but right now, they're not.
Edit: Hektik made an excellent suggestion, that if I could, I would add to the poll (can't edit the poll options): reduce the amount of ammo for sniper rifles in PvP. I suggest that, in PvP, sniper rifles can only hold the rounds they have IN THE RIFLE.
Edit: This is where I stand. What Bungie should do, but won't, is leave sniper rifles alone and buff the other classes. So, since that's not going to happen, here's my justification for my position:
Please allow me to interject a little realism (some folks freak out at the suggestion that realism has a place in a game with space magic, to which I respond: so we should just throw out ALL the laws of physics and principles of behavior and physiology???). Anyway, as a real-life hunter, it bothers me that there are no limits to hard-scoping. Eye strain is real, and can be brutal. Your shooting eye gets really tired when looking through a scope for long, yet in Destiny, there are literally no limits to the amount of time you can hard scope.
Second, and again pulling from real-life: when being hit by rounds it should be near-impossible to get off an accurate shot. The stagger needs to be increased. Snipers should ONLY be effective when not under fire. The onus is then on the sniper to become more stealthy, to move more, to setup where not expected, rather than rely on the fact that I have to land three head shots hoping you'll simply miss me with the one you need to make. Being killed by a sniper should be a surprise. If I've discovered your location, and pepper the area with rounds, you shouldn't be able to peak out, get hit, and still make the shot. It would force snipers to move and adapt. Rather than the hard-scope camping that is the plague of the current PvP mode.
Finally, and this is a bit of an aside: other than the distance of the one-hit kill-shot, what's the difference between hard scoping a corner or choke point and doing the same using shotgun? One tactic is vilified while the other is not. In my opinion, neither should be. I simply feel that there should be limits on the ability to hard scope, either intrinsic - limit the time you can hold scope view - or extrinsic - greatly increase the stagger when hit.
Edit: Great comparison of camping strategies: sniper camping is low risk, high reward; shotgun camping in high risk, high reward. Yet we tend to vilify shotgunners while snipers talk like their the shit. Hmm.
The problem is:
Low zoom
Low flinch
No descope while taking damage
Scope in speed is fast
No sway
Basically a 90% damage to the body scout rifle.

Excellent summary of the issues.
Excellent summary of the issues.
i deal with it. But after playing shooters for a couple decades, it's obvious that snipers are too flexible at the moment. Effective range to use it is 0 to infinite, especially with a fast swap to last word as backup. But hey, I love destiny. I'll just find ways to out play it. It's basically a counter strike style of gameplay right now. Stare at corners down scope. If you miss, back pedal to next corner leaving a grenade behind you. Repeat ad nauseum. Primaries are no match against a sniper now due to the lack of flinch, so the gameplay is sniper vs shotty, with the shotty player taking way more risk and the snipers crying that shotgun doesn't take skill. I'd argue that in destiny, neither of them take much skill. It's destiny.

Good stuff. I'd love to see you post more. Your analyses seem pretty spot-on.
Good stuff. I'd love to see you post more. Your analyses seem pretty spot-on.
the easiest way to beat it is juggernaut on Titan. Sponge a shot, then either kill them with chaperone or weapon swap to plan c for an instant fusion shot. This is high risk but you'll get plenty of angry messages

Nice. I love The Chaperone, and I revel in ego-bruised hate mail.
Nice. I love The Chaperone, and I revel in ego-bruised hate mail.
right now fusions are in a bad place partly because snipers are just more practical. I used fusion a ton in year 1. Pre charging and quickly firing around the corner was the evasive way to play it. The problem now is that you're not facing a primary when you pop out to shoot. You're facing a sniper that's only 10-15 feet away watching the corner, ready to back pedal wit last word should they miss. It's an immediate disadvantage so you rarely see fusions dominate a match these days

I never was a FR user. Just couldn't get down the timing. Plus, I'm a real-life shotgun shooter, so I had a pre-existing affinity for the class.
I never was a FR user. Just couldn't get down the timing. Plus, I'm a real-life shotgun shooter, so I had a pre-existing affinity for the class.
Plan c with juggernaut is by far the easiest counter to close range snipers. They usually switch weapons after your juggernaut pops. But you switch to your fusion for the instant kill. The benefit of plan c over shotgun is that you don't have to close the gap between you and the sniper by nearly as much and the fusion charge is almost instantaneous. You can get your juggernaut popped 10 feet away and it's all good. Pictures below show it for my videos. Juggernaut up, shield popping, swap and fusion shot. Hope this helps. Thanks very much, Acroninja. I'll check out the videos later, at home. An aside, what do you think of Telesto? It dropped for me early in TTK, but I haven't used it much simply because of my general dislike of FRs.

Telesto is really strong but the problem is that people will kill you between the time you shoot them and when the explosions occur. The best use of it is with a void hunter. You can use the little explosions to activate the "hunted" perk. Then you can keep pushing them back with the explosions or get them stuck in smoke. If you're in open ground you can shoot the gun then dive roll during explosions. I haven't found much use for it with a Titan. I prefer a standard fusion rifle. It's more of a pve weapon but I'm sure someone has found good pvp use for it

Right on. Gonna have to dust it off.
