Bungie has a trust problem

As we all know, Renegades was originally intended to be seasonal content for Edge of Fate, but it was stripped out and repackaged as its own expansion, a move that many see as a corporate decision designed to maximise revenue. We also know that Bungie had been secretly developing Marathon as far back as 2019. While Destiny players believed their purchases were supporting the future of Destiny, resources and profits were reportedly being funnelled into an entirely different project. The people who’ve follow Bungie are aware of this. But here’s the interesting part that some people may not know: this isn’t new behaviour. The same thing happened with Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach. Back when Bungie was under Microsoft, they were restricted to making Halo titles. During that period, they began developing Destiny behind closed doors. The engine foundations and gameplay ideas seen in Halo 3: ODST would later evolve into Destiny. Microsoft said no to making a new IP, so they did it anyway, but with a Halo theme to please Microsoft, until a time when they could do what they wanted. It’s actually quite mind-blowing to realise that Halo 3: ODST is a beta version of Destiny. Don’t believe me? Go play it, it genuinely feels like long patrol/open world mission. You can clearly see the DNA of what Destiny would eventually become. There’s even a Destiny Easter egg in ODST that seems to hint at what was coming and what they were really working on (Just don't tell Microsoft). You can also see behind the scenes of Destiny where it is running on the Halo Reach engine, there are also Reach resources in Destiny to this day. So yes, Microsoft were unknowingly paying for Destiny to be made. Resources meant for Halo were funnelled into their own secret project. Sound familiar ? Development of Destiny was happening quietly in the background while Halo projects were still being delivered. Lots of people felt that Halo: Reach seemed somewhat fragmented or lacking in certain areas. Some argue that this was because resources were already being shifted toward Bungie’s next big independent project. And they did this on a payroll for Reach. It seems Bungie works on its next move while the current player base funds it, often without full transparency. Now we’re seeing it again with Marathon. The broader criticism isn’t about ambition, studios are allowed to grow and create new IPs. The issue many players have is trust. When communication breaks down and priorities feel split, it creates the perception that the player base comes second to internal ambitions. That’s the real concern: not that Bungie builds new games but that they do so in a way that leaves their existing or "outdated" community's feeling side-lined. But more importantly, if the suits catch on, will they be willing to work with Bungie again? Let’s say Marathon takes off, then what? How long until the same pattern repeats itself? To me, Bungie often comes across as inconsistent and unwilling to fully commit, with an “we’ll do what we want” attitude rather than long-term dedication to the communities they build. And if that perception holds true, then it should at least make players cautious about where they place their trust. This video is awesome for showing early development Destiny, and your notice some interesting assets: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6byj9uyMvw Another good video for those interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3B9CvI3n19I ODST Destiny easter egg: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRV5UbSvby8 TL;DR: Bungie are industry rouges and should not be trusted.

    • Bungie and Microsoft split because Bungie was done with halo. Per their contract, they owed Microsoft another game. Halo 3. Halo odst was intended to be a dlc for halo 3. But Microsoft wanted to milk the franchise and forced odst as a stand alone smaller game as they bought time to figure out what direction they were going to take. Halo reach was a passing of the torch. They worked with the development team taking over the halo franchise. Ie Microsoft knew that bungie was set to go their own way and the reason being was bungie’s desire to chase their new idea. Destiny. They even had a sales pitch for Microsoft meaning destiny could have been an exclusive new ip for Microsoft. But Microsoft hates risks. Developers ALWAYS work on potential IPs in the background. Fast forward to 2017. Bungie was experimenting with other potential IPs. As all companies do. They thought Activision would have bought the destiny ip from Bungie. Activision did not own the ip. They were partnered for distribution. Activision took over development of destiny as a one year test run. Yes, working with bungie… but had three development production studios working on destiny. High moon, vicarious, and an off shoot studio. This was the mars dlc to forsaken and the seasons involved. Why? Because bungie had an 80 million dollar contract for another ip and they had already started pre production. Nobody was in the dark. But then Activision decided against it stating that the game vs the players expectations were not cost effective. I would throw in here that bungie most likely had no other roadmap ready. Ie Activision had nothing per the ips future. Meaning, Activision said we are giving the game back to bungie and bungie had nothing ready due to their over confidence that Activision would surely buy the ip. Oops. Then bungie, knowing yhat they had nothing on their plate for destiny, debated ending destiny or keep it going to produce income to stay alive as a company. This was in 2018. Their next dlc was shadowkeep. A rushed pieced together rehashed moon dlc. Ie using old assets. Meaning… Everything since said date has been from bungie’s decision to keep the ip alive. We have had great content since they decided to keep destiny going…. But as you can now see…. Why we have had so many reused assets since. Outside of behind closed door details of bungie’s decisions… This information has been out there… some of which one would have to piece together… but there has not been this great conspiracy of the ordeal. And I am sorry but… through the good and bad… Bungie has delivered albeit in a more focused budgeted fashion. Why? Because they had less than one year windows of development cycles due to all the above. Meaning the “would have, could have, should have” is long gone… and so are people that put “Bungie” into this scenario. The people who are bashing Bungie, and any other potential they have, are yelling at ghosts with the people of today, that were not involved, taking the brunt of the negativity. With Sony, bungie is now managed… But it is buried in a lot of cleanup. As an example of how bad things were managed… Marathon has been in development since 2018. Nearly 8 years. And was not even close to being ready for release just 8 months ago. So… with this long winded story that most likely will be read to this point… Bungie is now covered in negativity due to people who are no longer there that deserve the brunt of the negativity. The people who are there today are trying to clean up the mess while a lot of their playerbase is throwing their trash in the wrong dumpster.

It was actually taken from final shapes seasonal year, & the reason we moved to episodes & 3 drops per year, then back to seasons but 2. Several key giveaways were the actors for zavala, aunor & blue, only worked on destiny pre final shape & havent since,& renegades has them with voice lines & also text boxes with no voice - if it was recent it would have been text like edge, or voiced, not a mix. Joe Blackburn said they were working on new gambit maps for that year - soon after he left bungie & gambit support was totally dropped, I know these are bigger but nether was huge also, so it fits with bigger style seasons, the new areas were new gambit maps. He also said they knew the seasonal model wasn't liked (talking to npcs nonstop, ranking vendors, weekly drip fed story) & they were changing it but it would be some way down the line - this has all that, on steroids, & is very similar is size & scope to nether season, it even has no health regen, so likely made by the same team. You can even cut it up into 7 weeks & it's perfect for a 7 week season of old & makes a lot more sense that way.
