PS5 shuts off randomly, seems to be an issue for D2 only for me

Ok, so this is an issue that I have had come up about a month ago during the tail end of season 16. Was playing the Scarlett Keep GM in the boss room, and the next thing I know my monitor goes black and my PS5 shuts off. At first I thought I may have lost power to my whole house, but that was not the case. Then I thought maybe the power cord was messed up or that the outlet that I was using was going bad, but neither was the case. I unplugged everything from my PS5 and just waited it out for about an hour. Then I hop back on trying to play and I don't even make it an hour before it shuts off again. Now I'm worried, then I realized that maybe there's dust inside the PS5 clogging it up so maybe that's the problem, and indeed there was quite a bit of dust bunnies inside that had been built up over time, so I thought with that handled I thought things would go back to normal. Well not even a couple of weeks later I was playing the new dungeon during the Gahlran phase and next thing I know, boom. Black screen. PS5 shuts off. Now I'm not only confused, but I'm upset because I thought things were fixed. So again, had to go back through and clean the PS5 again to make sure it was completely clear of any dust. And I thought things were again, back to normal, but not five days later after that when I think I was just doing random daily bounties, all of a sudden... black screen. Again. PS5 shuts off. Again. And now I'm just at the point where I've given up hope on solutions. Cleaning the PS5 didn't work, power cord itself and the outlet its plugged into is fine, turned off the HDMI settings and turned off Rest Mode, and still nothing works. But the thing I've just noticed in the last week or so is that this issue seems to only happen when I try playing Destiny 2. My brother (who does not play D2) says he has no problems with the PS5 when he plays other games, and he'll play for many hours with no issues. And I too have noticed when I play games like GTAV or sports games or whatever, that I have no problems myself. I can play other games for hours uninterrupted, no problem, but if I try playing D2 I'm lucky if I get an hour or 90 minutes of gametime in before it shuts off. And the thing too is that the PS5 itself isn't even that really hot to the touch. It's warm for sure but not super warm that it's going to burn the inside of your fingers or something like that. As of this Monday I uninstalled D2 on the PS5 and have switched back over the PS4 to continue my daily adventures. And go figure, I can play D2 on the PS4 for hours on end, no problem, but can't do it anymore on the PS5. So this is the question I pose to anyone who can help me: should I try to re-install D2 on the PS5 again and see if that fixes the issue, or do it wait until there's a system software update for the PS5 and then try to re-install it? I'm just trying to figure out what the play is here.

  • When you say that you cleaned it, does this include removing the case and cleaning all dust from the heat sink, or did you just pop the panels and clean the fan? How old is the console, are you still under warranty?

  • Same issues here. I have a Series X and my buddy does also. When we get into some places with a ton of graphical stress the console just up and quits. I never had this issue before season 17 and I haven’t changed much of my build. I have also had my pc version of D2 lock up doing some of the same things I do on console. My pc is no slouch: 5950X and 3080ti. So don’t say it’s the console problem.

  • If it was a software issue, everyone on the same PS5 and Destiny 2 versions would have this issue. I have not, nor have any of the other 7 people that I play consistently with that are on PS5. This is a hardware issue.

  • I can play perfectly fine on my PS5. There just might be something wrong with your PS5 and it just overheats when it gets pushed hard. D2 is a demanding game on PC and next gen consoles alike. There are many 1000's of people I'm sure playing just fine on their PS5's and Series X's. This is the sort of problem that is a hardware issue and most likely cannot be solved by a software update.
