I got placed into a trials match with only four people total. Instead of balancing the game to be 2v2, the game was a 3v1 and obviously it did not go well for me. At first I thought my teammates got DDoS'ed from the game but I never even had teammates to get kicked from the game so this is most likely some edge case with Trials matchmaking. I routinely get matched with people with 1-3 wins and flawed cards when I am going for a 5th or 6th win with a flawless card. This is obviously anecdotal, but might be worth a look.
