I completely agree with you about MM not harming anything, a large portion of the community dont share the opinion though. I see no harm in raid MM, especially since it doesnt hinder anyone elses experience, as long as they dont dumb it down so it stays as hardcore as they intended. What better way to make a raiding party than in a raid itself and finding the people who play in a style which compliments yours, it also gives the community an opportunity to feed off each others experience. If they are unsuccessful and dont end up finding people to play with they can then use the other methods at their disposal (clan/forum/groups). But I dont feel anyone should be forced to deviate from playing the game for the purpose of finding people to play with. This seriously impacts on the game experience. On the negative for no matchmaking, too many people have an elitist complex so unless you start raiding early on are quite good, there is likely nobody that is going to actually want to give you a go and help you out, mostly due to the fact you wont be good enough for them. I've seen this happen in countless other games. I believe that will have a larger-scale negative impact on the game than implementing matchmaking for the more casual people to let them experience the content, and then decide if they want to go to the effort of adding people, or taking the time to join clans/groups/forums to try and succeed. Complaints will pile up regardless of MM or not, because a lot of players have massive egos and are too blinded to realise they aren't as skilled as they probably think. So realistically by not having the feature implemented and allowing people to experience the full game, or at least attempt it, is a bit of a stupid choice IMO.
