EXACTLY! I know Bungie has tried to shy away from the term "MMO," but everyone knows that is what it is supposed to be framed as based on the models that Bungie has described since day one.
What really peeves me off is that the hype train for Destiny (like this old Polygon article) back in the day made it feel like you could invest in this game and expect to be on the ride for years. And then there was a bit of a popped bubble feel when the beta came out and people were told it showcased 10% of the game's content. The original game was a lot smaller than expected, but we always were told more would come and it would be great to spend hours playing, which was true to a degree. But D2 nuked all of our progress and investment in the game! Back to square 1 for a "new" game set in the same world with my crap faced near mute characters being the only thing I got to keep.
Games like World of Warcraft, EVE Online, Elder Scrolls Online, Neverwinter, Star Wars: The Old Republic and so many more allow you to invest in your characters from day one. You invest time in the game, you make progress, you visit areas new & old, and when an expansion comes out it is like a giant party for the players because there's a ton to do! They don't lose anything when the expansion launches, they don't start all over or lose access to what they used to get to do, and these things provide more than just a reason to log in occasionally.
I get that Destiny isn't exactly a "MMO," but maybe if Bungie embraced the idea a bit more they would have the numbers they want logging in and loving the game. D2 would have been way better if it didn't kick us all in the groin and ask us to start all over again, setting the expectation that D3 will come in another 2 yrs to do it all over again. I began D1 as, what I thought at least, a long journey for many years with characters to grow in environments that I knew or would come to know. But D2 clarified that we would be dishing out big bucks year-over-year to have the system rolling back both the progress gained in game quality and the progress my character made.
If we could have back some of that experience they bailed on when launching D2, that would be appreciated.
