It has to do with wether the piece is exotic or legendary.
Legendary items upgrade by 5 after 305
Exotics upgrade by 4 after 305

Aight, except I don't have anything above 305 and sometimes it would still only do increase of 4 instead of 5 :-/

I think it's after 300 but I didn't wanna talk out of my ass. I know for sure it's after 305 up

It's usually 100% if it's a 5 point difference, exceptions are legendaries into exotics and blues into legendaries, sometimes with those it'll just be 4 out of the 5 points. Exotics into legendaries will sometimes give full value up to at least 6 points. This is just from my experience but I have infused well over 50 times by now.
