You should never lower your expectations. Just don't buy into the Hype, and remember, we really know nothing about the actual game until it releases. No man's sky is hype on steroids. It went from indie game to triple a godgame all based on wishes and hype. So much so the dev started drinking the kool-aid too.

NMS wasn't all wishes and hype. It was based mostly on what was said during actual interviews.

The Hype started immediately, first info stated "no mp". Within weeks, fanboys on all forums started with the, " oh, they'll add it" or " I heard it's in the game" even though dev denied it. Then just shy of release, dev starts saying everything the fanboys wanted to hear.. .the tidal wave had washed over him!

That's why I enjoyed No Man's Sky.

Always how I've been. I had low expectations for titanfall 2's campaign, although I was hyped for the full game due to more titans and pilot abilities. I was pleasantly surprised to see it. Overall though, I haven't been hyped for any other game than titanfall 2 since destiny released.
