I am a huge Destiny and Bungie fan, I have been playing since I was 13 when the dark below first came out, and my best memories gaming over the last decade can be attributed to this game and D1. But as the title says, I am curious to where our money goes.
I would like this article to be a discussion, rather than a hate piece, as I and many of us are probably curious to where or what our money goes to in Destiny/Bungie.
With one of the highest player counts in Lightfall, it would be fair to assume that with that came an increase in the percentage of players who bought the annual expansion, and or the whole yearly bundle (forget what’s it’s called but LF + all the seasons). We also have the dungeon pass, as well as standalone seasons, and the eververse doing better than ever (on the assumption that more players=more people buying stuff=more revenue).
For myself, I have no problem paying for majority of this stuff, and I often wonder why people get so strung up on the costs associated with Destiny. For example, there was the 2 dollar increase to seasons bringing it up to $15 (Canadian currency). And people were quite mad about this, but meanwhile a decent meal at any fast food restaurant is similar if not more (again $15 because of the Canadian conversion, I think $12 for USD, could be wrong).
I have no problem paying for something that I will enjoy, but over the last few years it seem there has been a drop off in quality and an increase in quantity. The days of content droughts are far gone, and I don’t forsee them coming back any time soon, however, the quality I think we can all agree has taken a massive dip, starting after Forsaken and it’s seasons.
These things combine into my question: where does our money go? Now the obvious answer that a lot of people are saying is “Marathon and other IPs”, now I am no business specialist, although I have a Bachelors in Business, but I don’t think it would be terrible for a company to take one products profit, and invest it into another product, it’s a business tactic as old as time. However, that shouldn’t come at the cost of the original products quality, which I don’t think it is, or will be. And on top of this, it would be unwise for the heads at bungie to allow a decrease in development budget for their current cash cow, which is also the current narrative within the community. So these points, I believe those arguments are not sound.
So with that out of the way, the question remains, where does our money go? With such an increase in revenue streams and monetization, what specific things in destiny are we helping to add or build? I found it very very fascinating when bungie let us know that 1 eververse item was able to fund the Whisper exotic quest in 2018/19 I believe. I wonder if seasonal content is more expensive to develop than many of us could give credit for, and if that’s the case, is it worth it to keep developing just to get rid of at the end of each year, or are things like FOMO, and it being so easily accessible things that contribute to its profitability.
One thing i am considering is how much better Bungie is as a literal company now compared to 10 years ago. They have clearly made strides in things like accessibility, inclusivity, and just a better working environment for its people. I’m assuming part of our money has gone to that, even though bungie would most likely never release that information as some people would dislike that their money is going towards things that do not directly effect them, ie: an accessibility team/person vs a raid.
Again I am more than comfortable paying for things that I use and like, but would like to know where the price increases as of late have been allotted too. Should we expect some new huge thing to come in the final shape, or should we set our expectations low and just kind of take the price increase with no real increase in value?
I am curious to see what the community has to say, and if there is anyone from bungie, or has worked with bungie I, and many others I’m sure, would be interested to your response! It would be a great way to give a bit of transparency and insight!
And pls try to keep this respectful to bungie guys, I know we don’t all agree with everything they do, but we shouldn’t bash the piss out of them for it, but rather talk about these things in a positive, constructive, and a respectful way.
Thanks folks

1 ResponderI’m sorry to say however you will never get this question answered unless you have access to the information directly. Bungie certainly aren’t going to talk about it being confidential company data and all you will get on these forums are a bunch of stupid answers from, to be kind, 12 year olds. You can freely Google a bunch of information about average salaries etc but you won’t get the specifics unless your Uncle is the CFO of Bungie and then he’ll get booted for divulging it.

Most of the employed members of society working for businesses around the Seattle area spend most of their money on Coffee, tents and fentanyl. I'm happy to fund Bungie employees so they can afford used RV's so they can park close to work and get the better substances to help with creativity. Go Bungie. Go Seattle. #moveBungieheadquaters (yes I know the tents are free in Seattle.)

10 RespostasThese days probably a lot of random stuff like all the diversity club they now offer for bungie employees, random political causes, reinvesting in Eververse, partnerships for overpriced merchandise that only 1% of the community will buy, freelancers, lawsuits & lawyers, ect...

8 RespostasOverdelivery is waste, as far as the people who control finances are concerned. Tightly controlling D2’s budget while they expand the studio and develop other IPs seems pretty sensible to me. (There’s a question mark over what happens after TFS. Will it be business as usual, or a major reset of the game requiring a huge injection of money?) We all decide if the game is worth the money when we choose whether or not to make a purchase. That’s the feedback to Bungie that matters most. It’s best not to make purchases on what you imagine might be delivered later on. Buy the product/service as it is proven to be. Bungie can do whatever they like with their revenue. Once we spend it, it’s not our money anymore.

3 RespostasIt's paying for bungies next ip or 2, so they can farm the same folk again and rinse you with fake promises etc. Guarantee they drop another "eXcLUsiVe ExOtiC" after the showcase that'll be yours early if you throw them £90 on a deluxe edition annual pass ( which will be 4 weeks of running a dire, repetitive 3-6 man activity and a 5 min cgi story and 5 to 8 reskinned weapons every 3 month if you haven't picked up on it the last few year! ). Now throw your money at the screen

1 ResponderThe reason why I am mad about the season pass price increase is the fact that I now have to purchase 2 silver packages, just to obtain it. Uninstalled Destiny when I found that out. These shady tactics are not for me.
-
Where? It lines the pockets of the fat cat CEO & upper suits at Bungie Inc. If you seriously want Bungie / Destiny to change - you need to stop playing & purchasing Bungie products. The only feedback gaming corporations understand is player population, player engagement, and sales numbers.
-
1 ResponderPays the bills , the employees, the $6k lunches. who cares we do not dictate what they do with the money that we give them. They make no promises on it's use.

Marathon and inside their big fat pockets lol

2 RespostasReality... It's none of our business where bungies money goes ..
-
Would you be upset if it all went to strip clubs??
-
Shareholders pockets and Marathon dev. I do really enjoy Destiny but Bungie aren’t the most honest to the Destiny community. Back around the Whisper mission Bungie claimed that micro transactions enabled those kind of secret missions, but we haven’t had higher numbers of these and they were removed.
-
6 RespostasI'm curious about why someone in my neighbourhood is banging and sawing in their garden at 10pm at night. 🤔

Matter and Marathon, gg!
-
I have no idea but what they have shown us is they can’t properly take care of two games at the same time.
-
The bulk of it, I'm sure goes to the next IP. They have been actively pursuing cheaters and cheat developers so I would assume a good chunk of it goes there. It is sad with the amount of money that they make that they can't develop PVP maps. I am not a PVP player, I'm pretty trash at it, but it is a very important game mechanic and should be kept up with. The sad truth is bungie is far removed from their community. They prioritize their PR and being a beacon of inclusivity. I would rather have a company that cares about their product more than their reputation. I would rather pay somebody to roof my house that is rude than pay a nice respectable person to put a roof on there that'll fail within a year The state of the game now is very much diminished from what it used to be. They have stepped away from campaign and storytelling. They drip feed the content that they do make and literally give the bear minimum I feel towards activities. A lot of the choices they make are the opposite of what people are asking for. The game is supposed to be a live service which means they should be paying attention to the feedback that their customers give them. If they fail to do so then it's not really a service. If they consistently increase the cost of everything and not listen to anybody they're literally just milking the people that will pay. Yes if we bought it and paid for it it's on us and we really don't have any right to know where the money goes to but if it's supposed to be a live service and they're charging people more they should be putting the bulk of what they make off of the customers. If I run a business and I increase my rates that I charge I would feel morally responsible to be giving people a better service

1 ResponderIt’s all going into a new AR called the Flatulancer, which requires many sound samples from well fed employees. Inspired by a collaboration with Gears of Wars “Lancer” rifle with a noxious twist.
coming soon
Base and bonus salaries are pretty damned good at Bungie. Easy to see where part of it goes.
-
9 RespostasIt goes to bungie. Where else would it go. Back to your bank account? How entitled are you to ask what they do with the money you paid them. It’s not your money anymore. It’s there’s. Cause you paid for a service.

Editado por magister1001: 8/9/2023 11:16:21 PMIt will be cash burn on employee headcount and retention. https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2022/02/03/sony-is-spending-12-billion-to-make-sure-bungie-employees-dont-leave/amp/ 1000 employees isn’t massive but if the average salary is 100k then that is 100 milllion / year on headcount. I’d imagine they are over staffed on stuff that doesn’t add value to destiny 2 and stuck with milking it to pay for that excess / poor resourcing decisions. I mean if you employed 5 people to make and maintain the new guardian ranking system you didn’t get any content at all but added 500k of costs of people who probably don’t have the skills to make good content. Just flashy banners when a match ends and change some numbers. Ie these people don’t have the skills to make new strikes / exotic missions / raids etc etc.

They feed it to me.
