What determines whether or not something is an open world isn’t the shape or size of the map, it’s how you go about traversing it. Are there any set paths the player has to take? If so, how many? How often is the player on one of these paths, as opposed to a free roam space? What is the purpose of that free roam space; is it just for a combat encounter, or the primary means of getting around? So on so forth. The overall shape—whether it’s a square, cube, ring, trapezoid, rhombus or circle—doesn’t matter, it’s the minute details, and means of traversal throughout it.
