I know I'm way behind on posting this, but why did people switch from calling generic enemy spawns "mobs" to "adds"? We already had a well-established word for it, and they are the same length, so you aren't really saving time by typing/saying 'adds'.
Why the change? Which do you prefer? I still say 'mobs' and get after my friends when they say 'adds'
Edit: So you almost unanimously agree that it is more of a contextual difference: mobs in the world, adds in a boss/objective situation. I'm still gonna call them 'mobs', but I'll lay off my friends who call them 'adds'.

Never heard add before. Only really hear mob in the context of Minecraft.
-
Mobs are mobs. The way I understand adds... Like when a Boss summons mobs, those are adds.

"Monsters."
Or if it's not that kind of game, enemies.
-
I just call them enemies, and then there's a boss. Usually don't have to refer to these generic enemies because.. well everyone knows to dispose of them anyways.
-
I'm indifferent. If they're already on the field/map/etc. I call them mobs. If they appear mid-battle I call them adds (for additional enemies).
-
tango, zeke, or camper, depending on the game that you are playing.
-
Mobs, adds, enemies, shitboots. It's all the same really.
-
It is mobs for mobile npc's in the game, usualy hostile. It is adds if you are in a fight and additional mobs apear, as a patrol or a spawn henche the name "adds".
-
1 ResponderBoth. As a long time MMO player we call mobs those that are stood around and normal trash mobs but adds are those that spawn in boss fights.
-
I've only heard "mobs" when referring to Minecraft.
-
What about NPCs? Personally, I prefer "computer guys" or "bad guys".

4 RespostasI mostly say "dudes on the right/left/top/the edge of the middle on the reverse side of gravity in the backwards timescale/whatever" Or just "help [position]"
-
Either. Doesnt bother me as I know what you mean. I say "adds" personally.
-
I just usually call them by their names or just say “things” ie help me kill these things or things have spawned
-
I usually just say “enemies”, or the enemy’s specific name, myself.
-
I use both. Mobs where there is no boss. And adds with a boss.
-
2 different things. Mobs = enemies that are passively standing there in the world. Adds = mobs that jump into the fray as you are fighting some other mobs.
-
I say enemies unless it's a boss fight, in which case I say adds, trash, or trash mobs.
-
I usually use mobs as a general term for peaceful and aggressive npcs but I usually use adds for strictly aggressive npcs
-
Enemies. I don't think I've ever said mobs or adds
-
4 RespostasI'm pretty sure "adds" started with Destiny? I prefer it tbh. It's a more accurate term for Destiny and shooters in general. In MMOs, you actually have adds grouped together and calling them mobs or trash mobs is accurate. In Destiny, adds usually spawn as a group, but spread throughout the encounter and move independently from each other. The term mobs doesn't really make sense here.
-
Mobs in the world. Like quests and such. Adds are are the mobs around a boss. Like and add phase, or a healing add.
-
Didn't know everyone switched. I say adds cause it just sounds better. Doesn't matter to me though
