Do you think Destiny is an MMO? Please look at the wikipedia description of MMO's before you vote. Pay special attention to the comparison to other games section as well as the game types section. Also here is a very interesting article from gameinformer where Bungie goes into details about their server technology and how it compares to MMO's. Please read and then we'll discuss. Here is the link: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2013/12/06/the-matchmaking-technology-of-destiny.aspx Sorry for my attention grabbing title.

  • If i'm not mistaken destiny uses background matchmaking while you're exploring (probably when you're walking through caves and buildings) and moving you through servers in the background so that you are always playing on a server that has other people in the same area. That's why there always seemed to be people around during a public event. Hopefully server size goes up some but imagine fighting the devil walker PE with 32 people crammed into the area. No challenge. Because if i'm not mistaken the whole of cosmodrome is not all one server but a series of mini servers that you are unknowingly being moved in between so bungie can make sure you always have people in the same area as you. While not technically not an MMO you have the possibility of being put in an area with any of the million people online who may be in the same area as you. Super awesome if this true. Crazy innovative of Bungie.

    • Destiny is a shared-worlds game. DEFINITELY not an MMO. I saw maybe 10 people on a map at once IF I was lucky. If it WAS an MMO, there's be about 100-300+ players at least.

    • To be classified as a mmo there needs to be more players available on a map or in the tower (hence the massive multiplayer part) its a persistent open world shooter. Its pretty much created its own genre of game and im totally fine with that

      • I'd say a game like Planetside is an MMO. Destiny? No. It still follows the limitations of traditional online console gaming. Still 16 player lobbies just like many other shooters out there... but it is doing something nice to make it a bit social wothout socializing lol

      • No. Isn't it easy to communicate in a MMO? I see all these players, and all I can do is wave, point, dance and sit. Oh, and shoot them. If you tell me to party up with them so I can use my PS4 mic. I do that in co-op. It's a high priced co-op. Bungie is footing the bill. I believe they are working on it. Sept. is not far off.

        • I'll start. Bungie seems to be saying in this interview that they did not want to make this an MMO like WoW or Eve Online where they use cluster servers and there are thousands of people are on a server. What they describe is that they are making an attempt at something better. The same persistant world without the problems of an MMO using seamless matchmaking. You still experience the ever-changing groups of people to play with. They use a mesh-based server system to simulate the best parts of an MMO and mix it with a great FPS. If you couldn't see a list of the people in the area or on the server the sense of the game being more like an MMO would be even more clear. Do I think it is an MMO? No. It's better. And I think it will really shine in September for the full release.

          • Also interesting is that wiki qualified a couple games as not MMO's in the comparison to other games section because they had less than 50 people on a server...
