Destiny 2’s Meta Is a Joke — But the Punchline Is Marathon

Ah, the final days before Prismatic — when the Destiny sandbox still bore a semblance of balance and the illusion of design intent. But then, Bungie remembered they had a DLC to sell. And like clockwork, restraint was thrown out the window in favor of spectacle. The meta was teetering on a knife’s edge of actually being decent, and then they gave it the nudge — straight off the cliff. We went from a curated sandbox to a full-blown circus. Pulse rifles got juiced like they owed someone money, and suddenly every weapon came with laser beam accuracy like the Traveler itself was guiding bullets. And instead of dialing things back? Nah. Bungie doubled down. Now it’s all about ability spam, synchronized crouch-camping, and fireteams holding hands tighter than a group of first graders on a field trip. And yes, inevitably someone chimes in with, “Well, Destiny was never meant to be competitive.” As if that somehow excuses a sandbox descending into absolute chaos. That’s not an argument — that’s a shrug dressed up as a take. The “space magic” excuse is just as tired. Balance matters because people play it competitively — not necessarily for money or clout, but because competition is intrinsic to PvP. Ignoring balance to the point that your game starts cannibalizing itself? That’s bad design no matter what flavor of magic you wrap it in. This isn’t a meta anymore — it’s a fever dream of power fantasy with no intention of waking up. Yes, it’s the worst it’s ever been. And what’s wild? People love it. They bask in this chaotic soup of nonsense, confusing excess with depth. And I get it — Bungie’s eyes are on Marathon now. But if that game is half as soulless as it looks (and right now it’s giving “AI-generated pitch deck” energy), then we’re watching a studio pivot from an identity crisis into a full-blown personality wipe. Destiny used to feel like it was made by people who loved games. Now it feels like it’s being managed by people who love engagement metrics. Charming, no?
