It took them awhile but they cobbled together a story plot in D1 that almost works. The D2 plot is so bad you have to be really gullible to believe it would work. I went along with it just to play the single mission. Would have been better to lay a trap for Gaul and wipe out most of his fleet. Then chase what is left of his fleet back to Cabal space. Then corner Gaul.
Edit: As for the no light thing. Come up with a different idea. Use one that makes sense.

Once they convinced Nathan Fillion to save the franchise things definitely did start to seem less absurd. Or at least he made the absurdity work. Nothing will ever make up for their refusal to use a time travel narrative to explain away the fact that all the player activities are inexplicably repeatable. It was right there from day one, already a major feature in the plot, waiting for Bungie to use it. Given that, I haven't expected a whole lot from the Destiny story. Fun gameplay, absolutely, but trash fiction imo.
