This is going to be a long post, so get coozy… are you ready? yep, you’re ready.
I’ve been looking into everything that made Destiny great and not so great, over the years I’ve noticed patches and changes left and right but at the end of the day these patches don’t exactly do much aside from causing more separation between weapons and abilities while also giving each class said abilities.
Destiny 1 was known very well for it’s unusual metas, most of which were coincidentally Exotics which actually made sense considering they were the best tier available and that only one can be used at a time.
The strikes had Boss specific loot with a weapon and class specific boss armor, which since it’s inception has gone missing since Destiny 2 (The sparrows were a nice touch though).
Raids actually used to drop Sparrows, Ghosts, Ships and shaders with a chance at an exotic (ghallahorn seemingly being tied in to VOG oddly), nowadays we don’t seem to get the full package… we have been missing something for quite awhile haven’t we? Ships… Yeah these things were forgotten for raids, but I’ve also noticed VOW is also seemingly lacking a raid ghost & ship.
Exotics and how each one had a distinction from the last… I remember getting my first exotic in Destiny 1, Necrochasm. It took me hours to turn it into Eidolon Ally, even more to upgrade it. I enjoyed that so I decided to look into others and I wasn’t disappointed. Xander Bounties could give out an Exotic Quest (Which is crazy to think about considering much more Rare exotics are in D2) and every time a new exotic came along there was always something new to each one. You either built it up, did a quest or just earned randomly by playing… not to say BUNGiE hasn’t been trying but i was kinda disappointed to see them re-use thunderlord’s area just to give riskrunner a quest. I asked myself “Why not thunderlord?” It’s an LMG (Very rare in D2, even after they made a few rare LMGs) and it’s a favourite among the classic LMGs of D1, wouldn’t new lights love it too?
Now story wise i got nothing to say, BUNGiE got better at it and that’s kinda it… they actually pulled off a great first season after a DLC this time!
Factions are… yeah, gone. Probably because the 3.0 system doesn’t allow players to simply carry a faction badge like 1.0 did given that 1.0 still seems to be beating 3.0 just by the fact that it felt more meaningful and wasn’t tied to only activities. Oh and the Exotic class item quests, will never be able to forget those rep 25 (or 50) Treats.
Crucible… well, I’ll say this now and save some time. It’s unstable, that’s why nobody likes it. The metas are usually legendaries and builds, nothing simple like Twilight garrison or Icebreaker. Something that actually takes commitment and isn’t roll based, which another thing… Adepts are possibly the biggest perpetrators of metas given how good they are, although I don’t blame them for at least trying to make the lighthouse worthy of existing aside from going to it like that datto club room in the tower.
Anyways, this is the big read… hopefully it wasn’t too long. Who knows maybe you’ll learn a thing or two if you’re a new light.

The current state for the past 3 years have been bad. I have a bad habit of complaining, I only play the game because it's popular and I miss destiny 1 but it's dead plus there's not really good games out right now but once mw2 is out I'm gone at least for a couple months but I always comeback and I wish I didn't but it's like an ex 😂

Social construct of team play. Both on PvP and PvE side. I also miss the live action hype videos Bungie used to make.

7 RepliesEveryone likes the idea of change, but many don’t like the reality of it. With respect you are so focused on what has been “taken away” that you have little energy to see what has been added. I have the quirk that I was born without the gene for nostalgia. D1 was never as good as many claim to remember, and D2 isn’t as bad as many of you want to insist. All in all D2 is a vastly better game that D1 ever was. But D2 isn’t trying to please everyone, and it is no longer a blank slate with endless “potential” for people to project their hopes onto. Much of D1s appeal was the hope of what it might become. While D2 is a largely know quantity.

I just wish we had starter areas back and old d1 planets mixed with the new. That's what I always liked in WoW, nearly 2 decades later and I could go kill the same boars and bears I did in 2004 just for the lolz. Heck the old villages in middle of nowhere make interesting pvp too when the wrong people show up, even more than goldshire. Mostly.

1 ReplyThe lore and storytelling and feeling powerful is what made this game great. That powerful feeling just isn't there anymore and the storytelling is carrying the franchise ATM.

What I miss... Is the D1 aesthetic. Not appearance, but the feeling, the meta of wandering the ruins of your own Solar System, picking through the ruins and cracking Pandora's Box, one layer at a time and finding the horrors beneath. There's no real way to recover that feeling in D2, due to inevitable progression. I miss that raw feeling of exploring the alien and unknown in my own backyard. Kind of the message of childhood itself, now that I think about it.

Pretty good sum up. Another thing was that grinding felt more rewarding before, but you nailed everything else. 👍

Friendship was the real endgame

1 ReplyWhat it really comes down to is, there really aren't many games that do what Destiny does. It's got pvp, pve, pvpve, coop, raids, dungeons, customization, unique gear, builds. I mean pvp only multiplayer games is only fun for so long and I think we are entering an Era were gamers are getting board with just pvp. I mean I used to love pvp games like halo 3 and call of duty, but as I got older and matured I very quickly realized they are all about the same and only fun for so long. Destiny has lots to do and lots to chase giving you lots of replay value.

It feels good to shoot things in the face and kill things with powers. This core gameplay loop feels better than any other game in this genre. Destiny got into the game early enough that it was just it and Warframe. And as a result both games were given time to grow and feel more like a full product. The combination has allowed Destiny see other games come and go. Some that people wanted to believe were “Destiny killers”. Division, Anthem, Avengers, Outriders. Some games are still technically active, but none have the community size as Destiny still has. Destiny’s core gameplay is fun. Not that every activity is fun. But we always want more content to kill stuff in.

3 RepliesWasn't it just one piece of armor from the boss of strikes and not a whole set? D2>D1 in every way, except on gunsmith wednesdays.
-
The answer is gunplay. Hence why ability heavy metals like the current one make the game less fun.

4 RepliesThis Quote made me want to buy and play this game.. "You see that over there, Ya, You can go there"

4 RepliesEdited by TheShadow: 7/12/2022 10:31:42 PMGoing off your title, The original Bungie had the passion and you could see it in their work. Unlike like this new Bungie. D1 despite all its issues it was designed a lot better than D2 will ever be, and the reason for that is the game was being designed for the player base as well as themselves.

Edited by RingersCheckmate: 7/13/2022 8:56:57 AMSparrows, ghosts, and ships aren't RnG drops anymore. They've been unlocks for triumphs like lore collectibles or the pike challenge from DSC. Flawless raid shaders, anyone? My memories of D1 strikes were in some OoB corner with an ammo regenning sniper or waiting on an ammo synth. It wasn't any glorious experience, and honestly GMs top that any day. I definitely miss strike specific loot, as it added personality to the items and was more memorable. I could never go back to armor 1.0. The sheer builds and not needing to grind an armor piece that has both the 2/3 stats I wanted AND the specific weapon perk I wanted was not an exciting chase. Factions weren't cut because of class items, (iron banner literally let's you transmog armor for rep) factions were cut because Bungie had no clear direction for them. Loot that was "A suros scout rifle, but it's got a dead orbit logo" wasn't enticing, and their previous factions rally ideas just tanked

10 RepliesWhat separates Destiny is the shooting mechanics and physics. Hands down it’s the best.

1 ReplyEdited by LocoToopa: 7/12/2022 6:49:10 PMRare random loot. Solid exotic and useful raid weapon chances every reset, which encouraged ppl to raid and do nightfalls each week. As apposed to farming tedious lost sectors whenever you like. I would much rather have the 15 solid chances of an exotic each week, not to mention the rare raid loot. It kept me coming back. The feeling of getting that drop on the screen was incredible, it was like taking a drug! Now it's just like "ok great whatever" Make Tuesdays great again!

Edited by Bungholio: 7/13/2022 1:21:46 AMThe only reason I started was that a friend said it had voice actors from Firefly and it was a space-magic-shooter hybrid. With more explosions than Borderlands! I would not recommend this title to anyone, except whoever invented aluminum garden hose fittings.

12 RepliesYou need to let go of the past. D1 was fun but D2 is the better product.
-
3 RepliesD1. If Destiny 2 as it was would have been launched as a solo game without D1, no way this game would have succeeded.

I’m gonna go put my Master VOG ship on my titan brb. Maybe I’ll put my Mandate of Strength ship from the duality dungeon on instead. Who knows what I’ll do

In d1 beta for me it was the feel of the game. Before the beta I had been playing borderlands 2 with friends and so when I hopped in destiny it felt amazing. Gunplay was smooth, the abilities felt good, and exploration was amazing. Once I actually started playing the game on day 1, the loot and look of the loot was what I started loving. I mean my first legendary engram that took me forever to get gave me mida multitool. I didn’t even know exotics existed as I never looked things up online about the game I just let myself explore. Bc of that tho I never learned about the loot cave till a week after it was patched. Day 1 vault of glass with my friends will forever be the best experience I ever had in a raid. Vault will always be my #1 raid bc of that. It’s like every new thing, even the not so good content, kept me coming back. The art style, gunplay, mystery and abilities always kept me hooked. That’s why I’m d2 it’s getting harder and harder to stay. Something needs to change either before final shape or after. I think it’s the seasonal model being the same horse mode over and over with a different skin
-
The loot is what makes me want to play, the origin traits are awesome and I would play the game more if the loot was worth chasing. There isn’t much this season to grind for apart from the crafted weapons. The dungeon loot is meh at best

-loot -discovering the destiny universe -enjoying my brand new loots in pvp -facing a challenge to get a well deserved reward. Now : loot is borring to get and to use (mainly reskined weapons) You cant use most of your new stuff in pvp because if its good its going to get nerfed. Nothing is challenging, you get the best loots from easy activities.
