It's a a selfless statement to get an innocent child to leave me behind to die so she can get to the chopper... Young'n. And they aren't preparing for the worst. They've already decided it's lost and are running for the hills.

...the grimoire, and what the guy says. Their cards paint a picture of someone running away and hiding it. They only left traces by sending a dead ghost back to the city. They're finding things and keeping them to themselves instead of sharing knowledge. They're asking the ghost they send back to erase all records of their ships. Even their name implies a few things. Being in a dead orbit means nothing is at the controls... So either they're a loose group of cowards with no ultimate direction, all fleeing as soon as they have a ship and enough wire wraps to run... Or they think humanity and earth/city/traveller are all in a dead orbit with no direction.

I see why you think they are cowards because they don't usually come back. But I guess not every mission is successful. But in that card it say their ship was destroyed and they were being played with by the awoken. They were exploring and were most likely killed on the expedition
