Too many players are unwilling to admit they are average players. And the average level of a lot of players is fairly high in destiny compared to other fps games.
Sorry you can't get matched with players who are handicapped.

First, let's look at your words. "Too many players are unwilling to admit they are average players. And the average level of a lot of players is fairly high in destiny compared to other fps games." You can't even define what an "average" player in destiny is because you gave use two different levels of skill in as many sentences so maybe try to shape your thoughts before putting typing them out. Second, I am an average skilled player in PvP. I was in high gold and low plat through my time in overwatch and I enjoy other shooters. I don't particularly enjoy PvP in destiny but I do it for the weeklies so I know the maps decently well and do OK for myself in quickplay. Heck I even solo queued and went flawless in trials. But when I join a match of CBMM when the leading player on the enemy team has literally doubled the top player on my team, there's an issue. As OP said, I am not skilled enough to face that player, no amount of counter-play on my part will amount to anything, epically since my last match was with a player so good at sniping they almost seemed like they were using aimbot and wallhacks. This is not an "average" player, this is a destiny 2 PvP enthusiast who would be 3 ranks above me in another competitive shooter.

Majority of players are on the bell curve. 2-3 games difference from each other. That is what it means to be average. You like many players are unwilling to admit youre just as normal as any other player. We can all shoot and react just as fast. Don't expect to playing against potato players, because there are none at this age in the game. I too played overwatch and I was high platinum and low top 500 players.
