To quote former Bungie employee Marcus Lehto: "Halo 5 broke the cardinal rule in cinematics that the main character(s) should never perform actions that rob the player of the experience. Many of the coolest action sequences took place in the cinematics rather than through my own gameplay experiences."
So many setpieces of Bungie's Halos that don't directly affect the story are cutscenes. The main thing I can thing of is John giving the Covenant back their bomb. So that's arguably hypocritical, without diving deeper into contexts (which should probably be done). Atop that, a lot of people weren't happy with H2's boss battles; to reduce Halo's magnificent, iconic sandbox to an enclosed space with special attacks and vulnerabilities, it's just a mockery of the game's mechanics. That said, I understand that killing Spark ourselves was intended to be deeply satisfying. They just could have done it better.
