Not my video, but I recommend giving it a watch if Halo has ever interested you - it highlights some striking comparisons between design philosophies of Bungie's original trilogy and 343i's games today.
You may prefer the newer Halo games (and that's perfectly fine) but I haven't been able to get into them in the same way as I had the older games, and this video brings home some of the reasons why.

Edited by Oddball: 9/10/2016 4:46:23 AMThis vid gave me a serious case of goosebumps. I feel like I just saw my entire childhood roll by :'( This vid makes me want to give up on Halo. 343 had 3 chances to prove themselves and they failed each time. Suck my nuts, 343.

2 RepliesEveryone hates on 343 but at least they have balls and try new things. Halo 5 is fun.

Comparison: Bungie did it better. -
I remember seeing this video before, which is kinda biased towards Bungie. I will admit that it does bring up some points of gripe I have with 343i, such as taking moments where players should be in control of the action and making it a cutscene (i.e. Chief vs Locke cutscene).
-
16 Replies343 is 100% fanfiction and can be disregarded as such. There is nothing worthwhile in their "canon" and everything from Cryptum onwards can be placed directly in the trash.

7 RepliesTo quote former Bungie employee Marcus Lehto: "Halo 5 broke the cardinal rule in cinematics that the main character(s) should never perform actions that rob the player of the experience. Many of the coolest action sequences took place in the cinematics rather than through my own gameplay experiences." 0:24-0:45 in the video reflects this.

Yeah. The first three Halo games are gaming masterpieces. The original and 2 especially are hugely influential. You can pick up Halo CE today and it's still incredible. The most damning thing I've noticed about Halo 4 and Halo 5 is how little furor or positive feelings there are over those games. There's just a whole lot of nothing. They're boring. 343's development mentality is so indicative of what I believe is the overall issue with Microsoft. They put all this effort into marketing, and having big lore with expanded universe with exclusive Xbox TV tie ins and cross play with PC, and blah, blah, blah and whoops! Forgot that at the end of the day people just want good video games they can pop in their console and play.

1 ReplyHalo 4 was pretty shit lol. Halo 5 is a decent enough game, but it's not a good Halo game. The end.
-
1 ReplyI fell in love with Halo when I first played Halo 3, but after 343i took over the gameplay, the story, the direction, everything else is not enjoyable for me.

While I could go in depth I can neither be bothered nor have the time so I will simply say this. Both companies have done great things with the franchise and both have made stupid decisions. While I want Halo to be the best it can be in all regards, despite each game bringing something new to the franchise ultimately none are perfect.

3 RepliesWithin the Bungie titles and the 343i titles there is always the restriction of the FPS formula. This being you're always running around with gun in hand (bar glitches and tutorials) and pointing it at something. This is where the cutscenes shine, they remove that restriction for a short period of time and give a certain cinematic quality to the game. Where the two companies diverge here is that Bungie was able to create cinematic instances without relying on a cutscene that takes away from the player's choice. Let's take a note from my favorite sequence of the entire Halo franchise, the Delta Halo arc. During the first half of this arc after you dismount from the tank and move into the center structure you come across one of the iconic chapter logos in the bottom of the screen, Off The Rock, Over The Bush, Nothing But Jackal. This instance gives way to a jackal sniper with his back turned toward you and presents a plethora of ability here. You could sneak up and assassinate the sniper and observe your surroundings to work out a plan or pump a few rounds into the back of his brain and go in head high guns blazing. Nevertheless, you are presented with this magnificent little garden of sorts tucked away within the level. Even Cortana herself comments, "You always take me to such nice places." The point here being that Bungie was able to create this type of experience that captivated the player with slow moments every now and then to break up the monotony of fighting while still creating epic moments outside of cutscenes. Even Halo 4 had these slow moments that immersed you within the world, yet it lacked the player freedom that was so prominent in Bungie titles. More epicness was packed into quick time events and the cutscenes than the actual gameplay itself making the player feel as if they were just a messenger delivering to the next cutscene or QT event. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Halo 4's campaign fully, but there is a defined line between the company that came before and the company that is now.

19 RepliesTo be fair, this started with Reach. It's not entirely 343's fault.

5 RepliesThe old halos were amazing, currently on a playthrough of all the campaigns again because it's been a while. Bungie truly made some incredible games. However, I very, very much enjoy halo 5, and it's probably my favorite halo, at the very least tied with 3. The launch left a bad taste in my mouth, but a bunch of the stuff 343 has rolled out has done nothing short of blow me away.

2 RepliesWe all need to remember, Bungie (halo bungie) is gone. And no way in hell would I want this Bungie to touch Halo.
-
I don't think Halo 5 is a bad game. Or Halo 4, I actually really like 4. But 4 is where the spark started to fade, and 5 just is missing that special something. I think they are good games in their own right, but they don't quite have that Halo legacy to them.

7 RepliesEdited by Onxide: 9/6/2016 9:45:40 PMI've been playing Halo since CE released, and I can honestly speak for myself when I say 343 has done a damn good job taking care of the franchise I grew up with. At this point in time, I wouldn't want any other company to make it, ESPECIALLY after seeing what bungie turned out to be lmao.

8 RepliesIt's kind of odd that when people look into games they either downplay or out right ignore things going on in their life. If you're a long time halo fan and have been around since the beginning you've changed as a person. And life has continued to move forward. Does this mean developers should be excused entirely? Of course not. I just feel like people are digging a little deep trying to explain their distaste when they really don't have to look any further than themselves. I absolutely love how halo 5's MP works. But I don't play it nearly as much as I played halo 3's. Why? Because I've got more interests in games as a whole now. Because FPS's in general have become a tired genre. etc. But anyway. Halo 4 in my opinion has the best story of all the games. It evoked emotion from me. Something I can safely say Bungie failed to do with 1-3. 1-3 feels more like an action novel that doesn't delve in on it's characters and focuses on the fights. Where as 343 titles feel like they try to bring in extended lore and actually give depth to the characters they are using. It really frustrated me that 1-3 was about the human/covie conflict. But we missed arguably most of the interesting moments as far as the universe as a whole goes. Reach managed to cover one of them. But even though I appreciate it now adays I still don't think it quite captures the feelings the book gave me. 5 is a middle ground for me. I enjoy both the story and playing the campaign. But neither are spectacular. I give 343 a bunch of leeway though since they are making an active effort to expand the universe as far as the games go. Which is what i've been waiting for. If I can applaud Bungie for anything out of 1-3 it's creating great levels with spectacular fights. Boss design needs work though. :P

They are all good games.

Story wise I liked the old halos. Gameplay wise, I love the newer ones. Halo 5 forge is simply amazing

5 RepliesLet me summarize without watching >bungie wanted extended lore seprate >343 wanted to add in extended lore >bungie story strength was staten (destiny is a good indicator. He is now working on recore) >343 strength draws from using extended lore >bungie music composer amazing >343 didnt get to have him At the end of the day 343 did great considering they didnt have the story and music assets bungie had. They tried their best to replicate considering they couldnt be allowed to copy things like sound files. (Why ghost and banchee dont sound the same) 343 did great considering what they were given. Sadly way before halo 4 came out anyone could tell with a new name that they would get dismantled and put under intense scrutiny. Some of those guys were hardcore halo fans and when they put hours and weekends into their craft the consumer takes their prized work and says "you are shit" "this is garbage" "what trash". Besides halo 4 was only a more polished copy of reach. Dont blame them for halo 4 blame bungie for that mess. Halo 5 is their game unlike 4 and mp is great firefight/warzone is great additions to the replayability of halo

1 ReplyI saw this video. Very interesting. I've been subbed to this guy for a while now.

3 RepliesI saw this on Reddit. It's totally biased, but cool at the same time. I don't completely agree with all of Bungie's points and I don't completely agree with all of 343's points. I do know that they have both made games which I love to play. As someone below me said, Halo 5's campaign was messed up. 343i relied on lore to introduce characters and that is not ok. I believe that 343 will take the feedback they were given and not do that again, same with the pacing.
