You can still play the game that way.
If you want to farm materials in patrol there is nothing stopping you.
Bounties are still there, exotic chest in the raids are still there, people to group up with are still there.
There is no rule book telling you how you have to play the game. Find a group of people that play the way you want to play and enjoy it all over again.

I was looking for a team for VoG the other day and couldn't find anyone willing. That's one way of stopping me from enjoying Destiny like I used to. Maybe I'll have better luck next time.

You have to answer that yourself. I play because it is still fun for me and I have lots of friends that play. We have a good time no matter what we do in game. We find new ways to screw up, screw up on purpose just for a laugh, find ways to make things harder and challenge ourselves. Fun and having a good time is the point for me, only you can answer what the point for you is.
