Thanks for the info on ethanol, I will have to look more into how much producing it pollutes. I've never heard someone bring up ethinol in a political or partisan way, but if it pollutes more than it helps and hurts engines then I don't see why it would be used. I also don't understand why we don't use diesel like Europe has, since diesel cars get much better mileage right off the bat. People are against fracking because they think it damages their local environment. Liberals and conservatives in state and local governments are conflicted with the economic opportunity and the environmental cost of fracking. This is not a partisan issue but a cost/benefit analysis. Also, fracking did not cause gas prices to drop. Price drops are a reflection of an increase in supply, mostly from oil rich countries in the Middle East that are trying to put our oil producers out of business by under cutting their bottom line. Fracking isn't profitable until gas is over at the very least $50/barrel. US Production has slowed because of how much oil countries like Saudi Arabia are putting into the market. This is why the XL Pipeline has been swept under the rug, it's not going to be profitable for another 20 or 30 years most likely.
