It was the random rolls. Everyone continued playing trying to get a "God" rolled "x". Combine that with the considerably lower drop rate for exotics (pre-ToC) which also kept us grinding. Exotic quests prolonged the grind. Those are what most miss about D1. D2 has some grind but nowhere near the Vanilla D1 grind... Not even remotely close.
