The reason the new system is better is flexibility. Keep reading for the details.
So, I actually fall into the camp of people who see this system as an improvement in PvP and as something that is neutral in PvE.
The kinetic/elemental/power system they have now actually is more flexible. This is because, especially Destiny 2, there is more variety in primary weapons than there was in special and power weapons in Destiny 1.
In Destiny 1 you had special weapons 1) shotgun, 2) sniper, 3) fusion, 4) the later added sidearm (tell me if I am forgetting anything). For heavy weapons you had 1) HMG, 2) Rocket Launcher, and 3) the later added sword. for Primaries there were 1) Auto Rifles, 2) Scout Rifles, 3) Pulse Rifles, and 4) Hand Cannons.
This means that between your Primary and Special Slot, you had 8 possible weapons you could equip. This means you had 16 possible combinations between your first two slots, and 48 possible combinations across all weapon slots.
In Destiny 2, you have 6 potential kinetic/energy weapons: 1) AR, 2) HC, 3) PR, 4) SA, 5) SMG, 6) SR. This means that you have 21 possible combinations in your first two slots.
In Destiny 2 you have 6 potential power weapons: 1) Sniper, 2) Rocket Launcher, 3) Grenade Launcher, 4) Shotgun, 5) Fusion Rifle, and 6) Sword. This means that you have 126 potential weapon class combinations in Destiny 2.
48 weapon combos possible in D1; 126 weapon combos possible in D2. (This is incorrect, someone pointed out that I forgot Linear Fusion Rifles in D2, see below)
That is a HELL of a lot more variety. The combos can't be exactly the same as in D1, which is what has people so bent out of shape, but that is a MUCH more flexible toolkit than what we had in D1.
If you have a boner for auto rifles and like using them exclusively, -blam!- it, equip two of them, one kinetic and one the element you need.
If you want to have one long range weapon and one short range weapon, do a Scout with an SMG or a sidearm.
If you get a great exotic, no longer do you have to worry about what you will equip in the other slot so that the exotic doesn't gimp you. If you get an exotic that you love but it is geared toward close encounters, you can equip another weapon for long-range.
This system is much, much more flexible. The only thing you can't do now is equip a heavy with a special that also hits like a heavy. I view it as a good change. Weapons capable of a 1HKO are lumped together, so you REALLY have to think about what you want to bring as your big enchilada. No more equipping a brutally powerful sniper rifle with Gjallarhorn and doing an entire boss fightt with only those two weapons and wiping the boss in a matter of seconds.
I think this is going to make the game more interesting and a lot more fun, once people get over it.
EDIT:: I forgot Linear Fusion Rifles. This means D2 has even more combos.
48 weapon combos possible in D1; 147 weapon combos possible in D2.

LMAO, that Time capsule tho. "LMATFO bet you -blam!-ing regret this post. Called it waaaaay back when."
-
I still don’t have a problem with the dual primary system. I hate the lack of endgame and focus on the cash shop.
-
Translation: "This is better for me since I'm tired of getting killed with special weapons in D1. Now I will have an easier time in PvP, since it revolves around primary weapons gun skill, which I am good at."
-
I won't lie, I abused the shotgun a bit with blink, it's probably better that won't happen as much.
-
There was really nothing wrong with that. I got toasted by shotguns a lot, but it never bothered me. I would just end up loading one for self defense, depending on the map. The maps and movement favored those tactics. Add weak primary weapons and you get instant shotgun meta.
-
To many ways to be weak.
-
The new loadout suck. Period.
-
252 combos actually 6x6x7=252
-
Yes, but that number includes duplicate combos where you have only swapped the kinetic/elemental type of the weapons, but are useing hte same types. For example: Auto-Rifle/SMG and SMG/Auto-Rifle. The 147 number excludes those combos, even though a different weapon would have the elemental burn, just because those combos would be too similar. You don't have to do this with the D1 numbers because it was impossible to double up on any of the same type of gun, but that isn't the case in D2.
-
But I like having a sniper and a sword
-
Omg someone already said this. Read it on reddit also. I'll take 48 Combos of weapons I will use over 147 weapons combos I know I won't use because if the weapons system. And a lot of the 147 will in fact be repeated combos only difference will be the burn on ONE primary. The other primary has no burn......soooooooo
-
The 147 doesn't include repeated combos. If it did, the number would be much higher.

Edited by RabbitFly: 7/27/2017 10:31:54 PMI already posted this in a different reply, but it was posted to the wrong thread, but your math is extremely biased. 1. You have loadouts that use 2 of the same weapon as an extra loadout. While that is technically true, it does not help your argument for more diversity. Therefore it should be excluded from your results. 2. The new weapons in Destiny 2 could easily have fitted within Destiny 1's weapon types and therefore should also be excluded from your results. Both of these things make your math extremely one sided and inaccurate when you are arguing for the idea of diversity. Further more it does not address that, like many her have mentioned, primaries generally operate within similar parameters, while special weapons were much more specialized. Having 2 primaries doesn't actually give you more diversity in the situations and ranges they will be useful, rather less.

What's the point in variety if it's less effective?
-
Kinetic shreds shieldless enemies, Energy shreds shields, power weapons get different amounts of ammunition depending on what you use. There's no real loss in effectiveness. Oh wait unless you're counting the free instant kill ability that specials have in which case stop whining about the loss of such crutch mechanics.
-
Shreds shieldless enemies? Were we playing the same beta? Shields aside the DPS of energy and kinetic weapons are the same. Unlike you I actually play video games for fun(shocking I know), I couldn't care less about being "skilled" or better than someone else(you know where to stick that comment about crutch mechanics). Tickling enemies to death with 2 primaries isn't my idea of a good time.
-
Oh im sorry you can't stand the idea of actually having to use a primary (oh wait im not) and not have that one shot kill weapon at the ready at any given moment. It's totally not boring to be a quintessential god at every turn. Oh wait it is boring.

Edited by Gubzs: 7/30/2017 7:20:55 PMYou're that person. YOU are the guy that gives horrible feedback and praises the game for making the changes you wanted. Then you slowly realize that you hate it and that the game feels much worse thanks to precisely the sort of thing you fought for. How is the removal of variety a good thing for the long term enjoyability of a game? I want you to really think that through and not just spout some swamp water like "this system requires more skill". Maybe it does, so what, it's far less enjoyable and at the end of the day enjoyability is what will keep you replaying the same strike one year from now. Developers need to stop listening to snotnosed brats who don't have the capacity to think their suggestions through to the next year or year after that.
-
You are the type of person that ruins games by giving the horrible feed back that takes any ounce of challenge out of a game in favor of essentially having god mode with infinite ammo on 24/7. Its that kind of feedback that made PvE so pathetically boring and PvP so damned terrible that the game isn't worth playing.

Edited by FL0W: 7/27/2017 9:13:57 PM147 combos...and at least 140 of trm are absolute crap.
-
Go into a DIY store. How many colours of paint do they have? How many shades? D1 = colours. D2 = shades. Variety does not necessarily equal difference.
-
Edited by ManicManiac4058: 7/27/2017 8:45:01 PMOf course there's more combinations they've added new weapon archetypes but there less variety.
-
I don't care about options. I care about my style of pve being eliminated. Don't piss on my head and tell me it's raining. Add a weapon slot for snipers, shotguns, fusions and sidespammers.
-
Oh now I see. So you want the entire game design to revolve around how you play PvE. Got it. lmao get outtaaaaa herrrrrreeee
-
Certainly not. I'm not a tryhard asshole pvper -blam!-ing up the whole game...no sir. I just want special weapons back. Get the -blam!- IN.
