For Atheon portals, I ask people not to shoot. If they can't pop off the hobgoblin's head, you've just shielded them. Instead, I advise throwing grenades down. If you pop to Mars, you'll do damage without getting shields down (I would only shoot if you see the relic holder in trouble and need to prevent a shot from getting off). If you pop to Venus, grenades will help with the Minotaur.

As long as the grenades don't do dmg over time, they won't trigger the hobgoblin shield. I tend to go firebolt made on the sunsinger because I can toss both out and nearly kill the hobgoblins.
