That wasn't the worst of it. The special ammo nerf punished EVERYONE who relied on their special weapon. If you used a special weapon as your de facto primary, you were punished. If you mained a primary but used your special for times when your primary wasn't the ideal choice... YOU WERE PUNISHED! The only people unaffected by this horrible mess were people who used only their primary. Further, Bungie knew how much most players hated the change and refused to reverse it, suggesting that this was not a misstep, but a deliberate effort to force us to play their way. I think they hope the anger will eventually die down, and the new meta will ultimately be accepted. They've also accepted that many people will leave PvP in disgust, hence the reduction in available Crucible modes.

  • It's called a primary for a reason.

  • I main my primary weapon (or I did, until this meta). But I understood that my special was intended to be a reliable Plan B, for certain situations. Some examples: * I use Last Word. But I'm being fired upon at a distance. Solution: pull out my sniper to engage the distant threat. * I use a heavy scout. The enemy is too close and moving too fast for my slow-firing scout to effectively lock onto him. Solution: pull out my shotgun and wipe out the attacker at close range. That is PROPER USE of a special: as a SUPPLEMENT to the primary. But to serve that purpose, a special must reliably work. A gun that has zero bullets is not reliable, and therefore has no place in my loadout.

  • It did not punish me, as I never followed the meta, or relied on special weapons. However, I have found that my setup (First Curse and Jabberhakke) has suddenly become in vogue.

  • Why can't a person have the freedom in a friggin' video game to use a special as their primary? You can use shotguns and snipers as primaries in any other fps...sure...you don't have a primary to back you up in the others...but...so what. Now...there's no choice....but...this isn't Call of Duty...this isn't Battlefield...this is Destiny...and what they had was a great PvP experience until they nerfed every fun friggin' aspect about pvp to the ground !!!! (first heavy ammo...and now special weapons.) Why can't the focus just be on fun, and allow gamers to decide exactly how they want to play their load out...For pete's sake...go to a pick 10 system like COD if people are so pissed that some like to use a sniper, shot gun, or fusion as their primary. Where's the friggin' freedom??? I thought this was 'Merica!

  • Apparently, that's not a choice that "real men" use. "Real men" use primaries or their bare hands because specials are the province of scrubs.

  • Fair enough. But I mained my primary, and I was affected too. For a special to be any use at all, it must be reliably available, for those situations when your primary is a less than optimal choice (too close, too far, whatever). A weapon containing zero bullets cannot serve its purpose. In the current meta, sidearms are now the only special that can serve that purpose. Anything else is just a power-up, and a mediocre one at that.

They've demonstrated that they are out of touch with the players and/or don't care what the players want. People understand this. Not only does the current Crucible suck but nobody trusts them anymore and there's no hope of real improvement... ever... at this point. (For D1) There will be increased activity for a few weeks with Age of Triumph and then it's "GAME OVER MAN!!!"

  • No, they understand that many players want a Crucible where players mainly use primary weapons. This is just a brute-force tactic to make that happen.

  • Except that a huge portion of players DON'T actually want a generic FPS where everyone has 50% plus primary kills. There are vocal minorities of hipsters/conceited players that think primary play is the ultimate "skill" as well as awful players with no thumbs that sit and eat buckshot because they have no awareness or reflexes. Shotguns needed to be addressed I guess. Part of the unfixable problem though is with many CQC maps which is not changed by nerfing special ammo.

  • I think Bungie has simply committed to this course, and is waiting for the storm to die down. And sadly, it will. Some players will find a way to rebel. Most will either leave or use primaries like good little boys and girls.

People are leaving. Matchmaking will get worse and more people will leave. All because Bungie can never admit when they make mistakes.

People are leaving, and it's barely even hurting the game. Funny how people are always leaving and Destiny is always dead, but it seems to net a million players and 110k view streams pretty easily.

  • If this was a mistake, they would have rectified it with the 3-28 patch. This was a tactical choice. They're gambling that the players who keave will eventually return, and that the players who rebel will eventually give up and embrace the new meta if they ignore them long enough. This may prove a disastrous mistake for them. However, we don't yet know for sure. It depends on what the players do.

  • Biggest competitor to D2 is D1. Think about that when analyzing reason for the secondary ammo change.

  • Indeed. But D2 is months from release. They're not going to kill the Crucible now, giving players months to find a new game to get into. If D2 was imminent, it would be another story. This is classic negative reinforcement. Use your special, we punish you. Use your primary, we stop punishing you. Us being angry is all part of the master plan.

  • This will be the last update to D1 for a long time so they had no choice in the timing of putting this PvP enjoyment handicap as I would say. It's easy for D2 to replace D1 in terms of PvE by providing new content, light levels etc. But PvP is not like that and players who love PvP D1 are less likely to be easily sold to buy D2 when there still having fun in D1.

  • Doing it this early would still be a foolish tactic. And they could easily give D1 the business right when D2 releases. With the new game complete, they'll have more people available, and it'll be a smooth transition.

  • I'm hoping this is their way of balancing primaries going into D2. Then they can bring back special and balance that.

Where exactly are they balanced? ARs are still mud.

  • I'm not saying that they're currently balanced. They've created an environment that forces primary use but unfortunately scout rifles won't compete against the other 3
