Assassin's Creed Unity: released November 11, 2014. Call of Duty: October 29, 2003. Call of Duty 2: October 25, 2005. Call of Duty 3: November 7, 2006. Call of Duty 4: November 5, 2007. Call of Duty Ghosts: November 5, 2013. Call of Duty AW: November 3, 2014. I could go on with more series but that's not the point. The point is series of games from multiple companies usually feature yearly/bi-yearly installments, but we can all use fake outrage if we want I suppose.

  • Cod was developed by 2 different studios so that's why they released titles every other year. Treyarch and Infinity Ward are who Activision uses. Just wanted to note that. As far as destiny, I love it. You get the grind and raid aspects of a mmo, but the snappy controls and play of an fps. If I we're to guess, they're probably not going to release a full expansion (destiny 2 would be considered the first expansion) in early 2016. Anyone who has played wow (or any mmorpg) knows that "dlc" brings a new raid tier and the expansion brings major content and character changes.

  • But I dont think this is the route bungies going, it won't be a yearly release and there's no Dev cycle . With the amount of content coming in form of expansions I wouldn't expect to see a sequel till fall of 2016 . Its not gonna be another cod or assassins creed. Activision won't cloud bungies judgement on this shit

Bungie has it in their contract with Activision to publish Destiny and subsequent follow-ups every two years as well as DLC expansions in the off-periods. This was revealed about two years ago and although their contract has probably since been amended that part probably still stands. D2 will indeed most likely will drop sometime Fall 2016. On a side note, the problem with Destiny is that is feels extremely incomplete and the train is beginning to depart for its sequel. There has been no closure for the first title; it still feels like a shell of a game. The examples you gave actually do provide that (despite the shit some of them have got). AC1, AC2, even the CoD series, etc., all came with complete stories and worlds, but Destiny apparently is to be rationed out over the next ten years via subsequent titles and small DLCs just to make up one complete game.

  • I get that but call of duty and assassins creeds excuse it that they ate on development cycles. Every year a new cod is releases because they have 3 different developers wworking on 3 different games. Bungie is a lone wolf and by itself it won't be able to do that. And they won't bring in a 2nd ddeveloper because that's the whole reason they parted ways with microsoft , they wanted to own there own IP and activision allowed them to do that. I get what you're saying that those games come out annually. But im just ssaying people can rest at ease knowing destiny's wont turn into that. Those games have 2-3 developers working on them. Activision only has bungie. So safe to say there will actually be innovation next time around

  • Great points. Well made. Your later comment around MMO being used a lot is also very valid. Destiny is not in my opinion an MMO. It's an FPS hybrid.

  • It's very odd because I'm not sure what to label it, honestly. It's almost like a RPFPS, but I would stop short of calling it role play as we traditionally think of it. That's the problem with a lot of games now having online components. Nothing is 'massive' anymore. Everything could be considered multiplayer and online, well almost everything it seems. The lines have become so blurred.

  • Yeah I agree. I think largely this is the issue with FPS's at the moment and has been since COD that story has taken a backseat in favour of online gaming. Have to admit I'm not a huge fan of online gaming. I would have loved Destiny to be that gap between FPS / RPG / MMO with a stunning storyline. I'm not getting the feeling of a gripping storyline. For me that's why I'm looking forward to Far Cry 4. Since Far Cry 2 the story has been brilliant and gameplay element has been there but online lacked. Ultimately I'm classing Destiny an FPS with elements taken from MMO. Don't get me wrong I love Destiny.

  • All game companies are in it for the money. I only believe EA truly doesn't care about the consumer at this point. I think Activision is on that path. However, I try to keep my opinions out of logic arguments as opinions only bias things.

  • It's not an MMO. That term is misused a lot. It has MMO elements, and to your point, World of Warcraft has a bi-annual development cycle.

  • 'Quality', as you put it, is pretty subjective. I could give you more examples, but as I'm at work and doing this from my phone I'll tell you GTA had put out a game at least bi-annually until GTA 5. Final Fantasy was annually/bi-annually with a few exceptions. Resident Evil has been bi-annual when you count content packs/expansions. There's many more out there. My opinion on quality and yours won't be the same, however.

  • Those games are not bi annual,1997,99,01, 02,04,05,06,08,13 See the pattern, the better the game the longer it took to put it out. And rock star is a company with 11 standalone titles and 4 expansions, they build quality so they don't have to add to it later. Activision is not quality, AC was quality but they are now following in Activisions foot steps. You see what I'm getting at? Any company that puts out a sequel every year should be avoided I was hoping by listing those games you'd release my point but somehow you think rock star makes a sequel bi annual
