I liked how the Grimoire cards actually helped with the backstory. When I read reviewers saying that they didn't know what is happening and didn't feel for the characters I was gobsmacked.
For example... how you died... it's right there in the Grimoire...

[spoiler]... you and a group of friends try to make it to the wall as they are low on food, hoping that the enemy has gone so they can get to safety. But they are discovered and the whole group are killed... including you! When I read it, it really made me empathise with the story more. Whoever the writers are, they are doing a good job if you just listen to what is going on. And, of course, read the grimoire. Cool thing is you can read whatever you unlock on your phone in the companion. So you can be going to work on the train and still look up your unlocked grim cards. Especially as they get tagged red for unread cards. Makes it easy to spot what you haven't read.[/spoiler]
