you are only allowed 12 people in a loby at the tower, and of that 12 people you can only talk to the 6 in your fireteam. if that makes it an mmo then by that standard cod is also an mmo because you can have 12 people in a loby. and are only able to communicate with the 6 on your team

    It's 16 not 12. *edit Wrong again... you can talk to everyone with PSN party chat. it's not any different than using a 3rd party like ventrillo to talk in WoW.

  • thats great for psn but in xbl party chat does not work in conjunction with the beta. and even if it was 16 thats still not a MASSIVE amount of people so its not a MASSIVLY multiplayer online game .

  • I've had this conversation countless times on here lol. It plays just like a MMORPG. Doesn't matter if it doesn't fit with the first M in MMO. In the mainstream gaming world MMO has taken a whole new identity entirely... stop nitpicking. Think about the genre itself and not the letters man. If IGN refers to it as a MMO, and they DO, then they have to correlate. This is coming from a company full of gamers and journalists.

  • Key elements of a MMO?? It has it all. Maybe for Xbox, but for PS users we can use chat to its fullest. In DC you never talk to more than 8 people at a time. In Destiny we can go beyond that, granted you have a playstation. Failing to see your point.

  • only if you open up chat outside of the game. the game its self is missing that feature. thats like calling skyrim an mmo because i can talk to other people playing it threw party chat.

  • wow has the massive part right, with the ability to hold upwards of 7000 people a server. there is also the option for text chat, which you can use to communicate with people in the game.

  • That's because FPS are extremely demanding of server computing power....and extremely sensitive to ping times. Part of the reason why (64 players on the same server) Battlefield 4 was such a buggy mess for so long. ...and yest these big multiplayer shooters ARE MMOs. They just aren't RPGs.

  • Right, they just don't t classify them as a MMO. when someone refers to a MMO it's usually the RPG sort.

  • Because---in the minds of many---MMO no longer describes a game MECHANIC, but instead a game STEREOTYPE:. A third person on-line action game--usually with some aspect of fantasy role-playing---with large numbers of people on screen organized around a social hub of some sort. The only thign that Destiny lacks is the "large numbers of people on screen" simply because FPS game play breaks down if you try to do it. Like I said in another post. I've was playing DC Universe On-line before the Destiny beta...and the game play MECHANICS were as close to being the same as you can get between a FPS and a third person combat game. Both games start you out in a single-player tutorial that doubles as means to provide plot to the story. Both games then take you to social hub where you can buy/sell gear, change loadouts, build and change team configurations. Both games then shift you to loading screens as you leave the social hub and move to the main play space. In the main play space there are many, many people...but you will only rub shoulders with a small number during the couourse of being in any single MISSION play space. In short...It played very much like Destiny. The only differences being that Destiny is a limited Beta...and DCUO is an MMO that has been established for four years. ...and DCUO allows people to ask you to join their "league" (their equivalent of a fireteam) in the field, whereas Destiny (for now) only allows it at The Tower. ...and even that invitation is limited to the other player offering you a "Yes or No" question. ...and no one questions DCUOs MMO bona fides.
