Bungie Vision in response to “popular” demand (from streamers): Reset player gear every season to create “grind”. If players could just carry the same guns and armor into each season, hot-swapping the seasonal slot, there would be less in the game to spend time chasing. Players want this. Don’t hate on me for saying this came from streamers; everyone can see for themselves that this is true.

  • a compromise, make seasonal slots backwards compatible only, rather than universal. So you still need to get a current set of high stat armor to use the current seasonal mods, but you don't have to vault old seasonal armor to keep using those mods too for raids, activities, armaments etc.

  • That doesn’t make sense. All seasonal mods dissolve at the end of their respective season. When the artifact goes away, all mods it granted go away with it. You may be confusing “seasonal” with “expansion” mods. Last season’s armor can equip only expansion mods — Dreambane — now.

  • i'm not talking about artifact mods, those do go away but i call them artifact mods because they are most closely associated with the artifact. Most seasonal mods remain in game but can only be slotted in gear associated with that season, which can sometimes be sourced from expansion content after the fact if that season also featured a permanent expansion like shadowkeep or season of the forge did. The problem remains however that you need to keep armor from those seasons to keep using the mods released in those seasons. And so regardless of the semantics, the mod slots that are issued with each new season are going to pile up because you need to retain them to keep using the mods that were issued with that season. The charged with light mods are being issued in this season, and so I will have to keep 3 sets of armor per character with the season of dawn slot on them practically forever. That is the problem. High storage requirements for previous seasons content.

Now, I see what you’re saying. Semantics matter. Without clear and specific communication, the message gets misunderstood. So, by “seasonal mods” for Season of Dawn, you’re referring only to the mods that are unlocked by ranking up the Obelisks. Since “seasonal mods” inescapably also refer to mods unlocked via seasonal artifact ranks, the message gets muddled when using the term “seasonal” to exclude a set of season-bound content. The Obelisks go away at the end of Season of Dawn. It makes sense that so would the mods they unlock. This is why Bungie tied them to seasonal armor. This is also why Bungie intends for players to discard all seasonal armor at the end of every season. We get Ornaments just in case you want to keep the look of a prior season’s armor on a future season’s armor (along with the new season-specific mods). Since the seasonal slot gets blanked out and can then only hold Dreambane mods, I see no value in hanging onto any season’s armor beyond the end of its season. I’m not saying I like the new system. Seems like more work than it’s really worth. Also makes it feel like each season’s mods are just short-term experiments. I no longer seek out pinnacle armor because that work becomes moot at the end of every season, wasting my time invested. That’s just not my kind of hamster wheel.

  • reading the description on them they say "Dawn Armor Mod" on each, and "undying armor mod" on the ones from last season, and "opulent armor mod" on previous ones etc. So i guess that's another reason why i refer to these as seasonal, because they bear the name of their seasons. But yeah obelisk mods is also a good name for them if you prefer, since i will still know what you mean by that. most... if not all non-artifact mods that have been added, have stayed, so seems like a good chunk of the community is positive these will also stay. But i have asked bungie on twitter if they will be removed. Maybe they will respond... not holding my breath though. i agree that the idea of investing in temporary systems and loot doesn't feel like a good deal.
