The best thing the could possibly do is say
'Hey, we messed up. We cut the story and all the contents people bought the game for. When we create new DLC, we want you to use the new things only, but we see you want to be able to use all of the things ever. We have a intensely opaque façade now, we won't tell you about the future of the game you pay us to make. We think we know everything best, even though we are a minority and clearly don't.
To fix this, we are going to revive the original story structure for the next game (let's be honest, its too late for Destiny 1, the future is where its all at). We are always going to stick with the Etheric light principle, however gear from certain activities will come at a higher base light level. Raid weapons gain their original elemental burns, but now upon sharding the gun, it drops the elemental core, to be infused on other weapons, creating no weapon bias.
Finally, we are going to start being more open with weekly updates that actually tell you where the game is heading in the future. Thanks for all your support'

That ending does seem rather accurate.
