I loved borderlands, but the loot system was garbage. You'd get an OP gun that negated almost all other drops. The weapons in Destiny are much more balanced by comparison, giving a larger variety of gunplay. As far as gameplay, what no one likes to admit is that RPG structured gameplay as seen in borderlands/any Bethesda game is just as repetitive as Destiny. Bungie just doesn't try to hide it. Any side quest in any RPG ever is basically "go to point A and do action B then return to A/go to C" usually while retreading already discovered territory. Destiny's equivalent are patrols and bounties, but you are usually able to choose where and how you complete them, giving the player more options while reaping the same benefits and being able to complete more faster through multitasking. The mission structure of destiny is way more socially oriented, allowing you to hop in, help and move on. Other games that relied solely on a level system over the course of an extended campaign left you feeling stuck having to replay old content with no rewards just to play with friends if they weren't as far along as you were. Destiny's compact campaign helps to resolve that, providing players an easy route to enjoy endgame content with friends where everyone has a chance at rewards. Also consider the economy. While it may be flawed, Destiny's economy and vendors far outlive the lifespan of any other RPG's vendors, where almost all gear you can buy is always a little subpar to what you've already acquired leaving you to accumulate an absurd amount of currency with absolutely nothing beneficial to spend it on. And the raids. Holy sh!t. The raids. Nothing compares to the raid experience of Destiny. All of that said, I do hope that Bungie follows borderlands lead and craft some new character classes for next year. TL;DR The major difference is really just in structure of content that's more socially accessible with better weapon balance/variety. That social emphasis along the carrot on the stick loot system gives more replayability than the more "traditional" long, drawn out campaign that becomes repetitive and boring in its own way.
