Why do people defend the endless grinding?

I’d like to start by saying I am a massive fan of Destiny. I can’t think of many, if any days I’ve missed playing it since it was released. I’m still chasing after Ice Breaker and Hawkmoon and I think that just having these two exotics in my collection would make the game slightly more fun to play for me. Like many people, one thing I’m not a fan of is the RNG. I don’t like the idea that I can invest a lot of time and effort into something and the ability to get the most out of the game is not in my control. Someone could get lucky and get exactly what they want with little effort, while others could play for 100s + hours and still be chasing that elusive exotic. That being said I don’t think that the amount of hours required to grind every aspect of the game, is relative to the rewards you receive at the end. It shouldn’t be the case that you have to be able to play for 10 hours a day to enjoy the game. A lot of people argue if you think Destiny is bad then you should play…which doesn’t make sense to me, I’m playing Destiny not another game. You wouldn’t argue the fact its repetitive by telling someone to play Minesweeper. Even if this was a relevant argument, just because other games do it, doesn’t justify it. If a load of games come out which require you to poke yourself in the eye for every 5 minutes of gameplay, it wouldn’t make me think it was a good idea. I like the idea that potentially anytime I decide to play I could get a random drop of something amazing, but this is much more of an idea than a reality. I know everyone moans about RNG hating them and that’s not what I’m saying. I have had some really good luck and guns, but when you’re only after one or two it makes it a lot less likely that I’m going to get what I want. It’s been said so many times before, but a trading system would make such an improvement to a lot of gamers enjoyably in the game. Nearly everyone I speak to has guns I would like and I even have some they would want. When you finish the VOG and get your third Last Word (a gun I never use) and someone who would kill for the same gun gets nothing, it makes me think even more that what I’m after is out of my reach. With the exotic drop rate so low, does this reward mean now there’s statistically even less chance of me getting what I want?! I don’t want to jump on the band wagon and rant against Bungie, because I am still a fan of Bungie as well as Destiny. However I am starting to wonder what reason they have for certain aspects of the game other than to keep people playing whether they’re enjoying it or not. My OCD keeps me playing because of the clever way the dailies/weeklies etc are designed, but the additional grinding required since the DLC is having the opposite effect on my play time, to the one I expected. It is getting to the stage where I’m only after a couple of guns which would keep my happy, but I’m starting to give up on the hope that I’ll ever get these. After having a quick go on Halo it reminded me what it’s like to see an enemy with a gun you want, kill him, then be able to pick up the gun and use it. I understand that Destiny is a different style of game, but I think I put in more than enough game time to be able to get the most out of that experience. Edit – Thanks for all of the comments. I’m pleased to see that most people have understood where I’m coming from. I’m not saying I hate the game, or I’ve had enough and won’t be playing again (who cares). It was a genuine question, because I play so much but I’m starting to get fed up with fact every time I play its to grind for something. I love the fact that anytime I play there is the potential for me to be rewarded with something amazing, but the same could be said for playing the lottery. Sure there’s a chance you could win, but not a very big one. Edit #2 - One possibility is the same method of random rewards, but instead of getting the actual exotic, you get an exotic token. You then take this token to Xur along with some strange coins and buy whatever exotic you want with it. They could make it so it’s a fair amount of coins required as you get to pick your exotic, but that way they would still be less common, because you’ve had to wait for the RNG, but people wouldn’t end up with three of the same gun and not the one they want. I know this will never happen, because it will reduce the amount of time people are required to play the game. Edit #3 - Thanks for all of the replies (even the people who think I’m an idiot). To all of the people saying that this is what MMOs are, I don’t agree that is as a valid argument for grinding so much. Just because something is done a certain way doesn’t make it the best or only way, if everyone thought like that we’d still be walking everywhere, but someone invented the car…I thought Destiny was supposed to be a game like no other which redefined gaming.

    • When I hear grinding, I just hear inefficiency. Some people are putting 300, 500, 600+ hours into this game. I've only got 160hrs SINCE FIRST RELEASE. I have a handful of good exotics, lvl 31 all raid gear except chest piece. Nightfall first for xp bonus Weekly 9 coin VOG Hard full run CE full run Pick up all bounties for the day Complete all bounties Activate telemetry Turn in all bounties AT ONCE That's pretty much Tuesday night. After that do some public events for upgrade mats and repeats the dailys when you logon. Tldr; if you donor enjoy running the raids, or strikes then it's gonna feel like a grind. You don't need every weapon on the game. If you want every weapon, then yep it's grinding time. People with 3 characters... Yep that's a grind. You cause your own pain.

    • I would only want trading available in one instance: activity rewards at the end of a Nightfall/Raid/Weekly Heroic/etc. You would only get to trade with a fire team member. RNG is still alive and well. It would just distribute items a little more to those in need of an item. This is not my idea btw. I saw this posted a few times in more than one thread. Sorry if this was posted on this thread already. I didn't read through all of the responses.

      • I've never heard anyone complain grinding on CoD/BF/GTA, which is why I'll "defend" Destiny. You "grind" any game you play. Deal with it, GG.

        • Everyone on this forum- "omg destiny sux so bad. I h8 this game I h8 grinding" Lol why are you on the forums? Why are you still playing? Go play cods 4 hour long main story. Some of us really don't care. It's a fun game, the pvp is awesome. Of course I don't enjoy grinding, but I'd rather do this than play 50 rooftop rumbles in GTA V online, or play 50 games of team death match on cod. I'm not constantly hoping for exotics, If I get one. Cool. But yall are making this into much more than it should be. I just compare this to runescape (not a good comparison) but, I played for days on end getting NO "exotic drops". Just play the game, have fun with friends. If you get that bored of it. Leave. All this negativity is not good for you, and probably reflects how you are as a person. Sorry for the book.

          • Because destiny is an okay game looks beautiful on ps4. but It's very addictive, very. It's poor reward system is what makes people keep coming back. Like a gambler that puts his last £ on a bet thinking he's going to win ££££££. Personally I don't gamble it doesn't interest me so maybe u notice it more. Over the holidays I played destiny until 3 am. Now I admitt. I'm stupid for doing that but it made me actually realise destiny isn't fun. It's an addiction.

            • If this weren't an RNG, everyone would've been over it a long time ago. I'm a COD gamer, and since Destiny, no other game has pulled me away from the COD franchise. Grinding does get old, so find a solid crew of people to play with. This isn't a game meant to be played solo.

              • It does get old fast, they don't add enough new content fast enough because their daddy company is more concerned about making money than actual players. I can understand this being they are a corporation but they need to find a better balance. I haven't been playing at all for this very reason.

                  • So I'm not a big MMO fan, (yes I'm aware destiny isn't an mmo but hear me out) with most of them it's the daily grind and needless levelling up that annoyed me, when I started destiny I thought it'd be the same, but for some reason I enjoy the grind. I don't get much time to game during the day while I'm looking after my son, so being able to run the daily and bounties within a couple of hours is good, also having low faction ranks (I couldn't be bothered with them early game) means I have something I can add to each time I play. I think with destiny moderation is a good idea, spacing things throughout the day rather than hammering them all in a couple of hours and leaving nothing else to do.

Here's my understanding: time is money, and destiny is a casino. You pay into it hoping you will win, and 99% of the time you don't, but the system either rewards you just enough or you want the prizes just enough that you keep playing anyway since, hey, you've still got time to spend... And your "good chances" refresh every day (or week) so you have an incentive to always keep it in the back of your mind. So you develop a gambling addiction. (: The reason endless grinding is good in that it always gives you a goal to achieve. In some sense Destiny is a one player game because, aside from the vault of glass, you don't need teammates to do anything, and you can't really interact with them to any advantage other than socializing. One player games end as soon as you get every achievement; maybe you haven't seen it before, but people often joke about Skyrim... "I think I'll make a new character, but as soon as I load up the game I change my mind every time!" type posts. Those posts show very clearly that a lot of people are ready to quit the grind once they feel they've seen and done everything important at least once. That's the inevitable end result of achievements (goals) in a one player game. As soon as you've got them all, the drive to play more peters out because the things that are left either don't exist or "don't matter." Maybe you would play if you had every gun you want (this applies twice over for crucible players), but many would not once their new toys lost their novelty. The reason some players wind up with a sense of "what do I do now?" Once they hit level cap is that they had been driving goal after goal for their entire playtime, and then suddenly goals aren't as obvious. Moral of the story: rng increases play time dramatically, deepens any addictive feelings towards playing, helps keep the gap between hardcore gamer and casual gamer relatively narrower, and helps keep you in the habit of returning daily or weekly instead of letting you plow through all the content, which is good from a developer standpoint since it keeps destiny fresh in your mind at all times. It might not be rewarding or awesome all the time gameplay wise, though. I think I could suggest many changes that wouldn't detract from the goals of the current rng based systems while rewarding effort a bit more, but I would like to believe Bungie has considered many of those things already, I hope. At the end of the day, remind yourself: if you're playing their game, their system obviously works on you at least. Edit; actually for life in general if you do something even though you don't like it, it's pretty inherently clear that someone is benefitting at your expense. In this case you don't like rng, but you do it anyway, and the producers of destiny benefit. The best play in that situation is to enjoy it. That'll show them. Hell yeah, ascendant shards for my nightfall! Yes! But in all seriousness playing destiny is a choice and it's fun because of the game, not the rng aspects. If you don't like grinding, just have fun playing strikes or crucible or raids or trying to glitch out of maps or something. It only stops being fun when you let your goals rely on the game rather than yourself.

Some people think bungie can do no wrong. When you post sensible logical ways to address flaws they go off the hinges. Let them have it. Im about done with it. I prefer to run VoG than Crota and i have nothing to gain from VoG really. The main problem with this game is its not about the players having fun. Its about stretching a small amount of content and making the most amount of profit that you can off it.

                              • It goes like this; Option One: Put so much content in game it keeps players busy untill you can release DLC with even more content. In this scenario content means so many different quests, long story, vast areas to explore and so on. Option Two: Put few quests in game, storyline, and make people do the same thing over and over again with cheap and fake barriers, like credit and faction rep weekly caps. You make those caps so tight people only just have time to reach end untill you release more content. In this one you resell same content again many times and claim it as New because it has bigger numbers in screen. I it's easy to see wich path Bungie decided to do in the end.

Those that put in the time, I've seen on this very forum cop up to cheeseing as they haven't been rewarded for doing it legit and don't want to waste the time anymore. Once this is fixed, a vast majority of legit complaints will be resolved. There are still a few loose ends, but that would go a long way.

I hunted for a set for my character on diablo 3 and that took ages going through the same dungeon over and over again for a legendary drop that I was looking for. I played maplestory....I don't even know how many months it took me to get the weapon I needed. I played wow.....I don't even want to go into detail...I played borderlands and I got swamped with so many loot I don't even know what does what haha. The point is its a rng based game and the majority quite don't get that, which is sad. Trading? So you want things handed to you? How is that rewarding? I spent 302 hours before my first gjhallahorn and I tell you what, IT FELT GOOD! STOP with the whinning and play the game it's a game you play it. No where on the case says "loot is received by crying and asking bungie to fix it." Why don't you instead ask for something useful say more vault space? The glitches still in vog? The damn heavy ammo glitch (I hate that with a passion) ps PLAY THE GAME -end rant-

                                                  • Gambling addiction is not a myth. People get hooked and don't know when to stop. With games like these it's even worse, because the currency you spend is time. A compulsive gambler eventually runs out of money. Casinos know if a player hits the jackpot too soon, they will lose the money, so they try to keep you playing. Eventually, you'll lose, they'll get that money back tenfold. I heard Vegas casinos pump oxygen in the air to keep you playing all night without getting tired. Slot machines have an algorithm to reward you just a little bit once in a while, to keep you pumping nickels into it. MMOs engineered their gameplay based on these concepts. When you're grinding you're just pulling the level on the slot machine. They need to keep you playing so you keep paying subscriptions. With Destiny release schedule, it's evident you'll spend $80-$100 a year to keep up. That is as close as a subscription model as you can get. I do think that Destiny dropped the ball with this system. They didn't need to do it. Unlike most MMOs, Destiny's gameplay is really enjoyable and can stand on its own. Like Call of Duty, they could have keep you hooked on the shooting mechanics alone. Resorting to MMO casino tricks shows lack of confidence in their product.
