Why do people defend the endless grinding?

I’d like to start by saying I am a massive fan of Destiny. I can’t think of many, if any days I’ve missed playing it since it was released. I’m still chasing after Ice Breaker and Hawkmoon and I think that just having these two exotics in my collection would make the game slightly more fun to play for me. Like many people, one thing I’m not a fan of is the RNG. I don’t like the idea that I can invest a lot of time and effort into something and the ability to get the most out of the game is not in my control. Someone could get lucky and get exactly what they want with little effort, while others could play for 100s + hours and still be chasing that elusive exotic. That being said I don’t think that the amount of hours required to grind every aspect of the game, is relative to the rewards you receive at the end. It shouldn’t be the case that you have to be able to play for 10 hours a day to enjoy the game. A lot of people argue if you think Destiny is bad then you should play…which doesn’t make sense to me, I’m playing Destiny not another game. You wouldn’t argue the fact its repetitive by telling someone to play Minesweeper. Even if this was a relevant argument, just because other games do it, doesn’t justify it. If a load of games come out which require you to poke yourself in the eye for every 5 minutes of gameplay, it wouldn’t make me think it was a good idea. I like the idea that potentially anytime I decide to play I could get a random drop of something amazing, but this is much more of an idea than a reality. I know everyone moans about RNG hating them and that’s not what I’m saying. I have had some really good luck and guns, but when you’re only after one or two it makes it a lot less likely that I’m going to get what I want. It’s been said so many times before, but a trading system would make such an improvement to a lot of gamers enjoyably in the game. Nearly everyone I speak to has guns I would like and I even have some they would want. When you finish the VOG and get your third Last Word (a gun I never use) and someone who would kill for the same gun gets nothing, it makes me think even more that what I’m after is out of my reach. With the exotic drop rate so low, does this reward mean now there’s statistically even less chance of me getting what I want?! I don’t want to jump on the band wagon and rant against Bungie, because I am still a fan of Bungie as well as Destiny. However I am starting to wonder what reason they have for certain aspects of the game other than to keep people playing whether they’re enjoying it or not. My OCD keeps me playing because of the clever way the dailies/weeklies etc are designed, but the additional grinding required since the DLC is having the opposite effect on my play time, to the one I expected. It is getting to the stage where I’m only after a couple of guns which would keep my happy, but I’m starting to give up on the hope that I’ll ever get these. After having a quick go on Halo it reminded me what it’s like to see an enemy with a gun you want, kill him, then be able to pick up the gun and use it. I understand that Destiny is a different style of game, but I think I put in more than enough game time to be able to get the most out of that experience. Edit – Thanks for all of the comments. I’m pleased to see that most people have understood where I’m coming from. I’m not saying I hate the game, or I’ve had enough and won’t be playing again (who cares). It was a genuine question, because I play so much but I’m starting to get fed up with fact every time I play its to grind for something. I love the fact that anytime I play there is the potential for me to be rewarded with something amazing, but the same could be said for playing the lottery. Sure there’s a chance you could win, but not a very big one. Edit #2 - One possibility is the same method of random rewards, but instead of getting the actual exotic, you get an exotic token. You then take this token to Xur along with some strange coins and buy whatever exotic you want with it. They could make it so it’s a fair amount of coins required as you get to pick your exotic, but that way they would still be less common, because you’ve had to wait for the RNG, but people wouldn’t end up with three of the same gun and not the one they want. I know this will never happen, because it will reduce the amount of time people are required to play the game. Edit #3 - Thanks for all of the replies (even the people who think I’m an idiot). To all of the people saying that this is what MMOs are, I don’t agree that is as a valid argument for grinding so much. Just because something is done a certain way doesn’t make it the best or only way, if everyone thought like that we’d still be walking everywhere, but someone invented the car…I thought Destiny was supposed to be a game like no other which redefined gaming.

  • My good man, I would like to start off by saying it's a system that our good overlords bungie have created. It's all based off of having to come back for more. Sure, you can do all the raids and nightfalls and weekly and such on all 3 characters IN ONE DAY if you would like, however this was intended. See the game is made this way so you always have a reason to come back. Every Tuesday you have a High chance for great items! That's how they get you. Most people (including myself) finish all of the raids (etc) I can every reset as soon as I get home. Why you may ask? Because it gave me a reason to play the game today. During the week there isn't much after that, which is why the vanguard marks and crucible marks are in the system. It gives a reason for you to come back every day, same with the bounties. You will come back to do them to rank your factions. It is a genious system. Because if bungie didn't want the game "addictive" and they focused on the parts everybody thought they were getting, the economy of Destiny would be literally, 0% unrelated to its current economy.

    • Anyone who gripes for a trading system is dumb, and doesn't realize it'll ruin "Destiny" the game is about getting your stuff yourself and the ultimate reward of getting "that weapon/armor" Just as in anything ever trading waters it down. It'd be like sports teams trading trophies Yankees: Meh I've got 27 of the stupid world series trophies, who wants one? Cubs: We'll take one it's been years.... Yankees: what will you give me? Cubs: Ummm, how about these sweet ROY awards? Or this HR crown? Yankees: ok deal Cubs: Well we've got this title now, what's the point in trying to win another one... Do YOU get it yet? Once people don't have to earn their stuff people will lose interest. It's already happening that hardcore players who are lvl 31, 32 only log on Tues and Fri for the Raid and Nightfall reset and Xur. Bungie doesn't want to give the truly elusive weapons to people or not. RNG isn't the best system, BUT I'd rather earn coins complete nightfall and raids than trade with a buddy for a GHorn. Cuz after the trade we'd stand there and say "ok that was easy, wanna go play (insert game here) now?"

What do you expect when Destiny is based off of MMOs. Destiny may not be an MMO but has the elements of one. MMO = Grinding Destiny = Grinding If you don't like it then play something that has no grind like Destiny. Simple as that.

        • At least we have the loot to keep and the grimoire. When you played contra back in the day and beat it you just had your word for it and whomever was watching you play at the time.

            • Grinding is an intrinsic core fundamental part of the game. Its basic economics. New content is too costly in dollars, man hours, and sheer power. Because of this, grinding is a part of the model. It's a way to stretch the game further. To get more gameplay out of limited (by scarce resources) material. That's why it takes ten hours to beat other games. You just play the content through with no grinding. If you just want the 10 hours out of destiny you can have it. If you want more you need to grind. Uncharted is an awesome game. How many hours does it take to beat it? Ten hours? You can play it over to get another ten hours or wait a year for part 2 or 3. But you can't play for months on end. Developers can only produce so much content so fast. Uncharted would have to have a new version out every 15 days if you wanted to keep playing. And that would cost 120 dollars a month. We can't afford that and developers can't produce that fast anyway. At least not reliably. It's the economics and tradeoffs of the price system, scare resources and supply and demand that control some of the things you're talking about. Same with RNG. It's a system that rewards many hours and lots of grinding. It a system that relies on probability and odds. In the long run those who stick it out will mostly be rewarded. This encourages continuous gameplay. If it were a system where everything was "earned" the game would then immediately cease to be what it is. And it would be to easily completed. For example, I've done every exotic bounty at least twice. Some more! But the reason I keep playing is because I might want Hawkmoon or Monte Carlo. If those two weapons were "earnable" I'd already have them and would have less incentive to play. What I'm saying is, that's what type of game it is. Little tweaks are one thing. But The things you want to change would make it another type of game all together.

              • Forget the ignorance in this thread. Destiny IS a grind game. It is the definition of a grind game. It is no different than Everquest. I've camped Urzok so I could complete that waste of time Urn quest, and I know many other players that have had to camp spawns. Sounds very much like Everquest. Additionally, doing the same content over and over again to level up your weapons and armor and to farm mats and drops IS grinding. I'm not saying it's not fun, because I love it, but don't fool yourself; Destiny is a game all about the grind.

                  • The grinding is because you cant get everything you want off the back, thats not destiny. Personally I'm glad there isnt any trading. The game would be flooded with Op weapons. Nothing would be special.

                      • I feel ya, i love destiny its a fun game but i do hate the rng. Like my one friend who we took through the raid was a lvl 31 did nothing and got a gun, the ship, shards, the shader, and a exotic. While most of us who did all the work got nothing but a few shards and energies lol. Thats prob my only pet peeve about the game.

                                • So far I have enjoyed the grind. Leveling up some exotics again hasnt bothered me too much. Now, if it comes time to do it a 3rd or 4th time then maybe i'll start to have a beef but since I am already running strikes, weeklies and nightfalls, the gun XP goes by pretty fast. Plus when I am playing on the PS rather than the X1 I use the remote play to grind out loot spots while watching movies. Keeps a little variety for me.

                                    • It isn't about defending, it is a matter of perception. Grinding games are not anything new, and some people simply enjoy them. What you get are not people defending a game that is being attacked, but instead people are feeling like they are being put in a position to defend an aspect that they do enjoy or, at least, do not mind. Completely subjective, at the end of the day. Yes, Destiny is a grinder - but that does not mean that anyone is either right or wrong for liking that aspect or not.
